<div>From a young age in Peru, my mom endured constant pain, surgeries, and limited medical options. At 21, she came to the U.S. on a humanitarian visa and began life-saving treatments. Despite this, the damage to her bones was already severe. She has since undergone multiple hip surgeries, years of painful recovery, and continues bi-weekly IV treatments that leave her weak and exhausted.

<div>Now, nearly 28 years later, her original surgeon, Dr. Francis Horniceck—an expert in Gaucher disease—has returned to her life. After tests, he confirmed that her hip is in critical condition and scheduled urgent surgery for September 25th. This surgery will finally give my mom the chance to move without unbearable pain.

<div>While Medicare helps, it only covers 80% of the cost. My mom must still cover the remaining 20%, plus living expenses during her recovery when she cannot work.

<div>Hola, mi nombre es Arena y escribo esto por mi mamá, Gabriela. Muchos la conocen, pero pocos saben que padece de la enfermedad de Gaucher, una rara deficiencia enzimática que causa agrandamiento de los órganos y huesos débiles.

<div>Desde muy joven mi mamá soportó dolores constante, cirugías y pocas opciones médicas. A los 21 años llegó a Estados Unidos con una visa humanitaria y comenzó tratamientos de enzimas. Aun así, el daño en sus huesos ya era grave. Desde entonces ha pasado por varias cirugías de cadera, años de dolorosa recuperación y continúa con tratamientos intravenosos cada dos semanas que la dejan con un <span>cansancio y una debilidad extrema.</span>

<div>Hoy, 28 años después, su primer cirujano, el Dr. Francis Horniceck—experto en la enfermedad de Gaucher—ha regresado a su vida. Después de varios estudios, confirmó que la cadera de mi mamá está en condición crítica y programó una cirugía urgente para el 25 de Septiembre. Esta operación finalmente le dará la oportunidad de llevar una mejor calidad de vida sin más dolor.

<div>Aunque Medicare ayuda, solo cubre el 80% del costo. Mi mamá aún debe cubrir el 20% restante, además de los gastos de vida durante los meses de recuperación en los que no podrá trabajar.
