My cardiologist recently discovered that <strong>I have a congenital heart defect called ASD (Atrial Septal Defect), which is a 2 cm hole in the wall between my heart chambers.</strong> They also discovered that I have several other anomalies with veins that send blood to my heart. Until recently, I had no symptoms, so this news came as a shock. Unfortunately, this defect has caused the right side of my heart and my lungs to work much harder than they should, leading to an enlarged right side of my heart and the early onset of heart failure.

<div>Because of this diagnosis, I will need surgery and will not be able to work for several months during my recovery. <strong>The funds raised will help cover in-home care, medical copays and bills, insurance, rent, and necessary supplies.</strong> I may also need help with transportation to and from rehabilitation appointments. Your support will help ease the financial burden so I can focus on healing and getting back on my feet.

<div>This was definitely not in my game plan, especially after a rough couple of years. I am currently in remission for rheumatoid arthritis, and I am so grateful for my family and friends who have supported me along the way. <div>Update: I met with my surgeon at Penn Medical Center on Thursday. He explained that the surgery will be done for two separate repairs. He will use the Warden method to repair the hole between heart chambers. This will be done by performing a sternectomy and the use of the bypass machine. He will also create a baffle or tunnel for the veins that are misplaced to redirect them to the heart. It was a lot of news and a bit overwhelming. He stated that I will be in the ICU for two days, then 5 to 7 in the hospital. We are going to discuss rehabilitation on my next appointment 10/1. This will also include blood work and another EKG. My surgery date is set for 10/13. I am anxious, but I know that I will feel better once I recover. A long road ahead of me. Thank you for all of your messages, donations, prayers and good vibes.
