Support Mickayla's Dance Against Addiction

Hello, my name is Mickayla Carr, and I am a dancer with Oklahoma City Ballet. For our upcoming performance called Future Voices, I am one of six choreographers crafting new works for this performance.

Future Voices continues to grow and flourish every year into a crowd favorite for our audiences. When beginning to brainstorm for this piece, I found several tracks of music that really inspired my vision that I wanted to share this year. When we as choreographers have to choose music, it often has to stay in the guidelines of “royalty-free” or “public domain.” Both of these options can be quite limiting to find inspiring music that fits the vision of our pieces.

This year, my piece is about something that not only hits close to me but to many. Addiction is something that has touched the lives of so many I know and love. I want to create a piece that can showcase the ripple effects it can have on not only the individual but those around them. One of the tracks I have requested to use this year was quoted $500 to use. The track titled “Dying Swan” by Claire Rockmore was one I knew would be a great canvas to meld my choreography with.

With this money, it would not only help pay for the track, but provide space for me to donate to the NCADD (National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence), something I have wanted to do for a long time. Addiction has both consumed and taken many in my life, and I want to push back against this ever-growing epidemic in the ways I know how.
