<div>Before the War: A Life of Dreams

<div>In early October 2023, our future looked bright. I was about to start a new job, and Mohammad had a good position as a supervisor at one of the largest companies in Gaza. We had many friends, a loving family, and a home we were beginning to build for our future. We even dared to dream of having a child and raising our family in that new house. Our life was peaceful and full of promise.

<div>October 7, 2023: When Everything Changed
</div>

</div>
<div>All those dreams were shattered on October 7, 2023, when war erupted in Gaza and turned our world upside down. In a matter of hours, our lives were completely destroyed.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We were forced to flee our home with nothing but the clothes on our backs and a few important documents, leaving everything else behind. As the bombs fell and violence spread, we found ourselves running for our lives.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We were displaced from our neighborhood in northern Gaza to the south, and in the chaos, our family became scattered. Some relatives stayed in the north; others fled south. Communication between us was cut off, and we had no idea if our loved ones were safe or even alive.
</div>

</div>
<div>Over the next few months, Mohammad and I were forced to move again and again just to survive. We have been displaced more than five times, each time leaving behind whatever little we had managed to gather.
</div>

</div>
<div>For the first six months, our “home” was a crowded metal shipping container where about 30 other displaced people were also sheltering. It was cramped and stifling, but at least it was something.
</div>

</div>
<div>When living in the container was no longer possible, we ended up in a flimsy tent made of tarps and fabric. This tent offers almost no protection from the elements—freezing cold winds cut through it during winter nights, and the scorching sun makes it unbearably hot during the day. Still, it is the only shelter we have now.

<div>A Family Torn Apart and Five Children to Care For

<div>was detained while trying to escape through what was supposed to be a “safe corridor.” He was simply trying to get his family to safety, but he was taken prisoner and is still being held to this day. We have had no word from him since, and his absence is a constant pain for us.
</div>

<div>Alaa’s capture left his five young children without their parents. Overnight, my husband and I became the only caregivers for my brother’s children.
</div>

</div>
<div>These five kids—Maria, Mariam, Salma, Adham, and Mohammad—are between the ages of just a few months and 12 years old. We could not abandon them; they are our family and our responsibility now.
</div>

</div>
<div>Caring for five children in the middle of a war zone, while we ourselves have nothing, is almost impossible. We love them dearly and are doing everything we can to keep them safe, but we are struggling to provide even the basics.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>There is no milk or baby formula for the little ones and no diapers to keep the babies clean and dry. We often have to tell the older children there is no food when they are hungry because there simply isn’t any. It breaks our hearts to see them cry from hunger or shiver from cold, knowing we have nothing to give them.
</div>

<div>Life in Darkness: Our Daily Struggles
</div>

</div>
<div>For over a year now (more than 14 months), we have been enduring conditions that no one should ever have to live through. Every day is a fight for survival.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Here are some of the harsh daily realities we face:
</div>
<div>•	No Cooking Fuel: We have been cooking whatever meager food we can find over an open fire of scrap wood for months, because there is no gas or any other fuel available.
</div>
<div>•	Rare Baths: We can only bathe about once a week, and even then it’s with water heated over a fire. Clean water is extremely scarce.
</div>
<div>•	Washing by Hand: With no electricity or washing machines, and very little water, we wash all our clothes by hand. Our few clothes never get fully clean or dry, but we have no other choice.
</div>
<div>•	No Electricity: There is absolutely no electricity where we are. When night falls, we live in complete darkness with no lights or heat.
</div>
<div>•	Sleeping on the Ground: For months we have been sleeping on the bare ground with no mattresses or bedding. Every night, we lie on cold, hard earth, trying our best to keep warm without proper blankets.
</div>
<div>•	Little Food: We have not tasted meat or chicken since the war began in October. We survive on tiny portions of whatever food we can find, often stale or of very poor quality.
</div>
<div>•	Illness and Disease: The unsanitary conditions and constant hunger are devastating our health. I have even contracted hepatitis due to the filthy water and living conditions.
</div>
<div>•	Children Suffering: The children have constant rashes and skin infections because we cannot keep them clean. They are exposed to the blazing sun, dust, and dirty water, and we have no medicine to ease their suffering.
</div>
<div>•	No Hygiene Supplies: We lack the most basic hygiene items like soap, shampoo, or toothpaste. Staying clean or maintaining any comfort is nearly impossible.
</div>
<div>•	Skyrocketing Prices: The cost of any food or supplies is now astronomically high. Even if we occasionally find a vegetable or some bread to buy, we often cannot afford it. Feeding our family each day has become almost impossible.
</div>

<div>We have endured all of this without any source of income or aid. We have done everything we can to survive with what little we have and to maintain our dignity, but after 14 months of relentless hardship, we are at our breaking point.
