Surgery and Recovery

Hi, my name is Marissa. I’m reaching out because I’m preparing to undergo brain surgery to receive a VP shunt, a device that will help relieve the pressure inside my skull caused by a condition called Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH)/ pseudotumor cerebri with Pappiladeema. It mimics the effects of a brain tumor without having a physical tumor due to the excess spinal fluid pressure going to my head. It has caused me debilitating migraines, vision issues, extreme fatigue, constant whooshing in my ears/ tinnitus, nausea, balance issues, and more. Without treatment, there is a very real risk that I could permanently lose my vision.

After months of testing and failed treatments, my doctors and neurosurgeon have determined that surgery is necessary. I’ve done everything I can to manage this condition, but the pressure in my head has continued to build, and this surgery is now the safest path forward.

I’m doing my best to plan ahead, but I’m facing the burden of out-of-pocket medical expenses during and after recovery. I’ve connected with the hospital’s financial team, but there are still costs that I’ll need help covering to get through this safely and focus on healing.

What Your Support Will Help With:

• Medical bills and surgery-related costs not fully covered by insurance
• Follow-up appointments, imaging, and prescriptions
• Transportation to and from my neurosurgical team
• Basic living expenses during recovery
• Support as I transition into a healthier and more sustainable routine

Any remaining funds will be set aside for future shunt repairs, which may be needed at an undetermined time.

I’ve always tried to handle things on my own, and asking for help like this isn’t easy for me. But if you’re able to contribute or even share this with others, it would mean the world to me.
