<div>Last October 2024, our sister Mariela received news that changed all of our lives—she was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian and endometrial cancer. Out of respect for her privacy and wishes, we have kept this journey quiet as we tried to process and support her through every step. Mariela has always been the kind of person who lights up any room she enters—her warmth, humor, and kindness draw people to her, and she’s always been there for anyone in need. Since her diagnosis, she has been bravely undergoing chemotherapy, facing days when she can move around and others when she’s confined at home, unable to do the things she loves. Losing her hair was especially hard, and the speed of these changes has been overwhelming for all of us.

<div> After months of strength and perseverance, Mariela now finally has her surgery date scheduled. This operation is a critical step in her fight, and as her family, we want to make sure she has everything she needs to focus on healing. The financial burden that comes with cancer treatment is overwhelming. Between medical bills, treatments, medications, and recovery care, the expenses continue to add up. Although my sisters and I have had to keep working to cover regular expenses and can’t always be by Mariela’s side, our mom and her partner Angel have been able to stay with her throughout treatment, while we support her every day through calls and video chats.

<div>El pasado octubre de 2024, nuestra hermana Mariela recibió una noticia que cambió nuestras vidas: fue diagnosticada con cáncer de ovario y endometrio en etapa 4. Por respeto a su privacidad y a sus deseos, hemos mantenido este proceso en silencio mientras intentábamos asimilarlo y apoyarla en cada paso. Mariela siempre ha sido el tipo de persona que ilumina cualquier lugar al que va; su calidez, humor y amabilidad atraen a la gente, y siempre ha estado allí para quien la ha necesitado. Desde su diagnóstico, ha estado sometiéndose valientemente a quimioterapia, enfrentando días en los que puede moverse y otros en los que se ve confinada en casa, incapaz de hacer las cosas que ama. La pérdida de su cabello fue especialmente dura, y la rapidez de estos cambios ha sido abrumadora para todos nosotros.

Esta operación es un paso crucial en su lucha, y como su familia, queremos asegurarnos de que tenga todo lo que necesita para concentrarse en su recuperación. La carga financiera que conlleva el tratamiento contra el cáncer es abrumadora. Entre facturas médicas, tratamientos, medicamentos y cuidados de recuperación, los gastos no paran de acumularse. Aunque mis hermanas y yo hemos tenido que seguir trabajando para cubrir los gastos habituales y no siempre podemos estar al lado de Mariela, nuestra madre y su pareja, Angel, han podido acompañarla durante todo el tratamiento, mientras nosotras la apoyamos a diario a través de llamadas y videollamadas.
