<div>My sweet and loving thirty-four-year-old sister Maria was recently diagnosed with triple negative stage 2 breast cancer. She also tested positive for the BRACA gene mutation, which means she is at a higher risk of breast cancer recurrence as well as a risk for ovarian cancer. The news of her diagnosis has been devastating to say the least.

<div>As she begins to prepare for treatment, I wanted to open up this avenue on her behalf for anyone that feels called to support her on this difficult journey ahead.

<div>She will have to undergo an aggressive treatment plan that will include 25 rounds of chemotherapy, multiple surgeries (including but not limited to a double mastectomy), radiation, and recovery time. If all goes well, the entire treatment plan will still take more than a year for her to complete.

<div>In addition to the emotional and physical toil she will have to endure, she will also suffer financial hardships as a result of her diagnosis. While she will do her best to miss as little time as possible with her students at Maple Elementary, it's likely she will need to take extended breaks from work during this process due to her aggressive treatment plan. She will also incur other costs, including significant out of pocket costs under her medical insurance, compounding the financial strain.
