 Maria and Alonso met each other in secondary school in Mexico. They started to talk, and soon became a couple. After a few years, they welcomed a son. Seeking money to support his family, Alonso went to the US and worked construction jobs. Alonso and Maria lived separated by borders until Maria and their son were able to reunite with Alonso in Maryland. Soon after, their daughter was born, who is now almost three years old. They were living well and were happy together.

 On Saturday August 8, 2026, Alonso was detained by ICE on his way to work with three other men. Alonso was taken to Baltimore first, then quickly moved to Fort Bliss, Camp East Montana, in El Paso, Texas. He was adamant to ICE that he would not sign anything. He said he had a family and they depend on him. ICE told him that he was going to be deported and he didn't have a choice. On Wednesday August 12, 2026, he and other men were deported to Mexico, stranded, without any of their belongings.

 Alonso had just begun taking a new medication for heart issues about 8 days before he was detained. He was not provided his medication while in detention, and he has not been able to get the medication in Mexico. In Camp East Montana, Alonso was also put in solitary confinement for a day and night while chained.

 Alonso was the sole provider for the family. Maria is looking for work, but she will need to pay for childcare and transportation, in addition to rent and food. Alonso’s deportation has been devastating for the family, emotionally and financially. The sweet memories – of Alonso playing with the children in the backyard or going for a walk after dinner with their daughter in her little plastic car – are painful now because of Alonso’s separation.
