<div>Luke is by far the strongest young man I have ever had the honor of watching grow. At 18, he has endured more physical and emotional pain than most people face in a lifetime, yet he still keeps pushing forward with a determination that leaves those around him in awe. He was born on April 25th, 2007, with severe liver complications that required immediate intervention. By just 15 days old, he had already undergone his first major surgery — a Kasai procedure — and spent those fragile early weeks in the NICU, his tiny body fighting for every breath.

<div>As he grew, his battles only deepened. Luke has faced countless hospital stays, multiple surgeries, and the relentless challenge of living with chronic illness. His liver transplant, a moment meant to symbolize hope and renewal, came with its own burdens. The powerful medications required to prevent rejection compromised his immune system, leaving him vulnerable to infections most of us never have to fear. But none of those scars, etched across his body from years of surgery and struggle, cut as deeply as the ones left behind by the loss of his sister, Ashley, on February 20, 2023, and his mother, Bridget, on May 21, 2024.

<div>Now, as of last month, Luke's journey took yet another devastating turn just days before his 18th birthday. Severe pain and sudden illness led to a diagnosis that no family ever wants to hear: Burkitt's Lymphoma. This is a rare and highly aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that typically grows and spreads rapidly, often doubling in size within just days. It is considered one of the fastest-growing human cancers, requiring immediate and intensive chemotherapy to have any chance of remission. For Luke, this means enduring cycles of treatment that will push his body to its absolute limits, testing his strength in ways even the hardest battles of his past could not. The very medications meant to save his life by preventing liver rejection have allowed the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) to infiltrate his lymphatic system, leading to this new battle against a disease as fierce as it is swift.

<div>His 18th birthday, a day meant for celebration and hope, was instead spent in a hospital bed, waiting for the test results that would confirm he and his father's worst fears. The nurses, in a small but touching gesture, decorated his room with balloons and a banner, a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is still room for kindness and connection.

<div>Despite all of this, Luke remains a kind and thoughtful soul. He loves to draw, spending his quiet moments creating Sonic characters, anime, and other worlds of his own design. He also enjoys playing video games, finding small escapes in a reality that has often felt unkind. When my sons visit, he clings to every hug, telling them 'I love you' and 'I’ll see you soon!' again and again as if to etch those connections into his heart forever. He is stronger than many of us, and his courage in the face of unrelenting hardship is nothing short of inspiring.

<div>Sean, his father, has been a pillar of strength throughout Luke’s life, never leaving his side, even when the walls of a hospital room became their second home. Sean has sacrificed more than most of us can imagine to make sure his son is never alone in his fight, and he would do it a thousand times over, without hesitation. This level of dedication can be isolating, emotionally exhausting, and financially devastating, yet Sean’s commitment to his son remains unshakable. Many of us parents preach how we would give up everything in an instant- our stuff, our freedoms, our jobs- to save our children. Sean is living that moment right now, only leaving the hospital in small spurts in order to grab clean clothes and for the last couple of weeks; his only focus is making sure Luke doesn't have to face any part of this alone.

<div>Today, as his classmates from Corunna High School’s Class of 2025 gather in cap and gown to celebrate the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next, Luke is marking this milestone from a hospital bed, joining his graduation via Zoom, his father seated beside him, holding on to every precious moment. This is a victory that so many take for granted — a moment that, for this family, has come at a tremendous cost.

<div>But this fight is only just beginning. As part of his intensive chemotherapy, Luke’s white blood cell count will drop to zero by day 15 of this first cycle, leaving him with no immune system at all. He will spend the coming weeks in isolation, unable to leave his home or even go outside until his immune system slowly recovers. He faces four such cycles, each one pushing his body to its absolute limits.

<div>It’s a scene that no parent should have to endure — watching their child, who has already suffered so much, celebrate a moment that should be full of promise and possibility through a screen, knowing that the world outside is moving forward without them. This could be any of us, and no family should have to bear this burden alone.
