Support Luger Garrett Reid’s Return to Health

Please join Canada’s luge community in rallying support for our teammate, Garrett Reid, in his continued recovery from a serious head injury sustained in training, November 2019.
A member of Canada’s NextGen Team since 2018, Garrett was given a 4% chance to live immediately following the accident and remained in a coma for several months with his parents, Ken and Leesa, and brother Parker by his side.
Though it was estimated that Garrett would need to remain in hospital up to two years, he has been a model of hard work and determination and, after 238 days splitting his time between three Vancouver Hospitals, he was discharged July 15, 2020, to continue rehab from home. His recovery to-date has been nothing short of a miracle, having defied predictions by doctors who thought he would never wake up, and exceeding all expectations of doctors who believed he would. Garrett will soon celebrate his 18th birthday as he continues to defy all odds.
That said – a long, expensive road lies ahead for Garrett to achieve a complete return to health. The Reid family have faced substantial costs since July 2020 and it is anticipated those costs, in the range of $100,000/year, will continue over the next three years. Garrett’s weekly rehab schedule has included 12 - 14 visits with physiotherapy, Massage, Occupational and Speech therapists, neurofeedback sessions, hyperbaric chamber, psychology, strength and conditioning, and tutoring. Garrett has also needed equipment purchase/rental and numerous supplements to help with his recovery.
Garrett is a talented athlete, a great teammate and most importantly a wonderful young man who we are thinking of every day. On behalf of everyone at Luge Canada, we are grateful for your potential support to help our teammate and friend in his recovery and rehabilitation for a full return to health.
