Support Left Bank Books Collective

Left Bank Books is a radical bookstore in Seattle's Pike Place Market. Since 1973, we have been a collectively-run, worker controlled, labor of love.

We carry quality books of all kinds, from hand-made how-to zines to anarcho-surrealist cookbooks. Our purpose is to spread radical, anti-authoritarian and anti-capitalist ideas. You can find books, pamphlets and zines here that you won't find anywhere else, including several that we published ourselves.

On March 16th, due to the Covid-19 crisis, we decided as a collective to furlough all paid workers and to run the store on a volunteer basis. But we would like to be able to support people in the collective who have been unable to access unemployment.

We're now asking for financial support to get us through this moment.

We applied for an SBA disaster relief grant, but anticipate being a low priority for fund disbursement.  Applications for the Paycheck Protection Plan closed before we were able to find a banker with permission to sign us up, and we've since decided it won't be a good option for us. We didn't qualify for the Washington Small Business Relief grant because they define a small business as having fewer than 5 employees and we have 7. GoFundMe might give us $500 for running this campaign #SmallBusinessRelief. The Amazon Neighborhood Relief Fund has given us a small grant, and Pike Place Market has reduced, but not suspended, our rent.

We were in a position to make it through the first two months on our own, but it is still uncertain when we'll be able to safely reopen and resume anything resembling normal business operations.

We've assessed that $15,000 will be enough to support us for two more months of financial instability. In addition to taxes, insurance, utilities, and the debt to our landlord we're accumulating by not paying rent, we owe $18,000 to distributors, and would like to begin paying some of that back as soon as possible. We intend to prioritize paying small presses like AK, PM, Pioneers Press, & Small Press Distribution.

When Left Bank started in 1973, no one knew if it would survive its first year. Yet, we've held on and often flourished through 47 years of market crashes and political upheaval, spreading radical independent literature. Covid-19 won't be the thing to take us down.

We appreciate your support in these difficult times.
