Support Leah’s Healing After a Traumatic Brain Injury

In late August, Leah suffered a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) from tripping down the stairs while carrying boxes. Initially, an ER visit provided hope as the CT test appeared normal, however medical professionals advised Leah to monitor for symptoms. A few days later, more symptoms emerged, and by midweek, it became clear that something was seriously wrong.

Since then, Leah's road to recovery has been challenging. Over the past few months, she has consulted multiple neurologists, undergone evaluations, and began specialized therapies to address persistent symptoms, including migraines, vision issues, and difficulty with cognitive tasks. Although Leah has made progress, she is unable to drive more than 15 minutes at a time, and struggles with reading and handling cognitively demanding tasks or multitasking. Due to the severity of her symptoms, Leah has been unable to work at her job as a Special Education Teacher at Redmond Middle School since August. Her doctors are unsure when she will be able to return to work as it is dependent on how she responds to treatment.

Leah’s doctors have emphasized that a full recovery will not be possible without specific therapies. They have recommended vision, speech, and vestibular therapy as essential components of her recovery. Unfortunately, vision therapy—the most critical component—is not covered by insurance and costs approximately $1,000 per month out of pocket.

This therapy is crucial to retrain Leah's brain to coordinate vision, focus, and process multiple tasks. Without it, returning to work or achieving full recovery is not possible. Her recovery timeline is expected to span two years, with the goal of gradually returning to work in late spring.

Financial support is critical for Leah’s recovery, as the monetary burden is too immense for Leah and her family. Due to being out of work, Leah’s income has greatly decreased and her expenses have skyrocketed.The goal is to raise $23,000 to help Leah cover vision therapy. Every contribution—no matter the size—brings her closer to healing.

Leah grew up on Orcas Island and has been an active and integral part of our community. From her work at The Funhouse to serving as a paraeducator at the public school, Leah has touched the lives of many island youth.
