On Friday night, 7/11/25, my mother (Krystina) and her husband (Omar) arrived on their street where their house is in Wilmington. Upon arrival they noticed a large crowd, (around 10-15) of intoxicated people blocking the entire road. Omar told Krystina to please stay in the car and he’d ask them to move so they could park their car and get inside their home. After getting out of the car and calmly approaching the intoxicated crowd, they immediately became belligerent. One woman started yelling and screaming obscene threats, the most concerning threat was “I have someone who will blow your head off”. At this point she decided to hit him multiple times and he tried to defend himself and leave the area. Multiple other drunk bystanders decided to include themselves in the physical assault, instead of doing the right thing by quickly separating and diffusing the attack. Horrified, Krystina exited the car hoping to help her husband who was being brutally assaulted by multiple drunk men and women. Moments after Krystina exited the car and Omar was on the ground being kicked and punched by a group of people. Another intoxicated male decided to draw his unregistered firearm, point it at Omar’s head, and fire two rounds. Thankfully he missed Omar’s head but instead the first hit him in the back of his shoulder, shattering his scapula. The second shot missed. This horrifying distraction made the crowd disperse and gave them both the chance to escape and get back in the car. Once they entered the car Omar was screaming in pain and let Krystina know he was profusely bleeding from his shoulder, how he was now having issues breathing, and that they needed to get to the hospital immediately. Once they arrived at the hospital, Krystina and Omar were separated and treated like criminals. Omar was stripped completely naked, disregarding any of his dignity. While in an entirely separate room, Krystina was distraught worrying about the wellbeing of her husband. Police were pressing her for answers, but in her state of shock and grief she was too afraid to speak to police due to the fact that many of their assailants live and frequent their street. After hours of emotional turmoil, they were finally allowed to be reunited. Omar was still naked, medicated, and disoriented when Kristina got to him. He had multiple bullet fragments pulled from his shoulder due to the attempted murderer using hollow tipped bullets. The two were then discharged very early in the morning, with no options other than to return to their home. That same morning the man who fired his gun at Krystina and Omar was lurking around their house and on their street. They decided to go to the police station and report the heartless monsters who almost murdered Omar, and tore apart their lives. They cooperated with the police fully, providing as many details as possible, and risking their lives to identify the man who shot at them. In return for their cooperation, the police led them to a program called victim advocacy. They were told and promised that with full cooperation this program would help them take care of medical bills, medication, physical therapy, lost wages, finding a new home, giving them a safe place to stay while their perpetrators were still running loose and they were left trying to piece their lives back together. The representatives from this program treated them horribly, giving them nasty attitudes, and refusing to speak to Krystina after she reported the disgusting behavior of a person who’s job is to aid traumatized victims. The representatives were refusing to return calls, or even help them relocate to ensure their safety. They felt like they were lied to and used to get information for a conviction. Krystina was also able to identify multiple other attackers from Omar’s assault and the Wilmington police department has decided that pursing the gunman was the only worthwhile conviction of their time. The other degenerates who jumped one defenseless man and instigated a deadly situation get to remain free and potentially jeopardize their safety. Krystina and Omar are facing homelessness due to the lack of care and diligence from the victim advocacy program AND the Wilmington police department.
Currently Omar is still suffering from immense pain from a shattered scapula, and due to the neglect from the victim advocacy program he is unable to get physical therapy that he desperately needs. He is unable to work and provide any kind of income for their family.
After watching her husband be assaulted and then shot, Krystina has immense trauma and PTSD. For the last few weeks, she could not sleep, has experienced severe debilitating anxiety, all while trying to help Omar heal and aid the police in their investigation. She is enrolled in a day program to help her work through her anxiety, and trauma. This program is basically a full time job running 9am-3pm daily. She is also unable to work and provide income for their family.
They do plan to sell their house as soon as they possibly can, however they need help with living arrangements urgently. They are not safe to return home since the Wilmington police are deciding to not pursue the other attackers. They live in constant fear of retaliation from friends, family, and associates of the gunman. Their attacker has a $43,000 unsecured bail set. He knows they worked with the police, he knows where they live, and he has the potential to get out of jail and harm them. There have already been comments in support of the shooter on social media due to a video circulating Instagram and Facebook. They haven’t been able to return to their home without a police escort.
Unfortunately, the only thing these poor victims have learned is that despite how cooperative, compliant, and in need they are, law enforcement and government programs do not care about them. They reached out to the governor’s office, to the attorney general, and many other state funded programs. Their only response to the situation was “this is not our department’s problem” and the best solution provided to them was to “check out the homeless shelter near them”, where they could be potentially attacked or murdered. They’re left to drown in a situation that was out of their hands from the very moment they arrived on their street. If you’re reading this and you have the ability please donate whatever you can spare, share their story, or provide us any information you have on aid or affordable living accommodations. My mother and Stepfather are kind, caring people who did not deserve this. They do not deserve this heart break, this pain, constant fear, and the potential to become homeless due to unprovoked gun violence.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this story, we appreciate you and your time.
