I met Kris three years ago in Sitka, Alaska, while playing trivia at a local restaurant called the Mean Queen. She worked on a local fishing boat and quickly became a close friend. Kris is the kind of person who never meets a stranger—her warmth and kindness shine through in everything she does. My husband and I have a severely autistic daughter who rarely engages with new people, but Kris managed to connect with her in a special way. Our daughter became attached to a lotion Kris had, and late one night, Kris went home and returned just to give that lotion to her. It was a small act, but it meant the world to us.

 Kris has always been the first to bring food to someone’s doorstep or offer a helping hand. After my own surgery, she would quietly leave meals by my door so I could rest and not worry. That’s just who she is—thoughtful, generous, and always thinking of others. Now, Kris is facing her own battle. She had to have her appendix removed unexpectedly, and during surgery, doctors found a mass. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 goblet cell adenocarcinoma, a very rare and aggressive cancer. Living in Sitka, which is on an island far from the mainland, means Kris and her caregiver must travel to Seattle, Washington, for the specialized oncology care she needs.

 Because Kris can’t work and her significant other must care for her, the costs of hotels, food, and transportation have become overwhelming. The funds raised here will help cover these essential expenses so Kris can focus on her treatment and healing.
