Hello! My name is Kelsey Morris, and I’m excited to share my journey as a college student at the New World School of the Arts. I completed my first year of college at Howard University. Before that, I spent my years as a dance magnet student at Norland Middle School and Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School, where I graduated with a diploma of distinction and was recognized for my leadership and choreography.
My early influences in dance began with the African Watoto Dance Theater, Delou Africa, and the Marshall L. Davis African Heritage Cultural Arts Center. I started with African dance and ballet, but as I grew, so did my love for diverse styles, including jazz, modern, and contemporary dance.
However, my path hasn’t been without challenges. I was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 11, leading to major surgery at 12. Today, with two rods and 24 screws in my spine, I stand as a testament to resilience. Thanks to the incredible surgical team at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and my supportive teachers, I’ve regained my confidence and ability to dance, and I refuse to let anything hold me back.
I’m a determined dancer, constantly seeking new opportunities to learn and grow as I pursue my dream of becoming a professional dancer. I’m currently raising funds to attend the Ailey School summer intensive with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Manhattan, New York. This experience would not only sharpen my technique but also bring me closer to my aspiration of making a meaningful impact in my community through the arts.
Every contribution helps, whether it goes toward tuition, airfare, housing, or transportation. Your support means the world to me and is a crucial step in my journey. Thank you for being a part of my dream!
