Kelly has always been one of the strongest people that I know. Growing up, she continuously showed her strength through her work ethic, strong will, physical endurance, and faith. She always fought for others, and now it is our time to fight for her.

In July, my sister fell ill while on vacation with family in Myrtle beach. What started as fatigue, back pain, and tingling in the hands and feet turned into extreme muscle weakness and paralysis by the end of the week. She spent most of her vacation in and out of the hospital undergoing tests to figure out what was going on.

On July 28, Kelly went to Charlotte hospital and has been in the ICU even since. It was there that she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). GBS is a condition where your immune system attacks your nerves and causes paralysis and breathing difficulties. She has completed one cycle of IVIG treatment, but the road ahead is still very long.

She was originally put on a ventilator to help her breathing. Unfortunately, she developed pneumonia and was very uncomfortable from the intubation. On August 13, Kelly had a tracheostomy done to help her out. She fights each day to try to breathe on her own.

My sister has always been a fighter but her and her family still have a very long road ahead of them. As a mom of three, she has only been able to see her kids once in the last month and has missed time with her kids (like their first days of school). As a stay at home mom, Kelly will need an extreme amount of help as she slowly gains her strength. Recovery from GBS can take years. Kelly's husband, Geoffrey, has been by her side the whole time and has not been able to work.
