Revised story, update and thank you:
Keith was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma in February of 2002. At that time, he underwent a grueling treatment protocol involving multiple rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and two surgeries. In 2007, the sarcoma recurred in Keith's right shoulder region and to remove it he underwent another surgery and course of radiation. When the cancer returned in 2010, Keith's right shoulder and arm were amputated as an aim for a cure. Unfortunately, the cancer metastasized to his left thigh and in 2012, Keith underwent surgery to remove the tumor in his left leg and received subsequent radiation. Keith faced another recurrence in 2014, requiring additional surgery and radiation. From 2018 to present time, Keith has faced multiple surgeries and treatments, including an unsuccessful clinical trial drug. Several surgeries involved extensive tissue and skin grafts, requiring long periods of rehabilitation. Keith transferred his care from Duke to the University of Pennsylvania hospital in early 2024. He and his family make regular trips up to Philadelphia for monitoring and scans. Last year in August, Keith was given only one option to try and remove the cancer that continued to resurface in his left hip. He made the unfathomable decision to have part of his pelvis and left leg amputated. It is uncertain what lies ahead for Keith and his family. He no doubt faces daily challenges in terms of mobility, everyday functional activities, and mentally adapting to his new way of life. The Holdaway family has completed some renovations in their home to make it more accessible and several additional projects are pending. They were able to purchase a handicapped van so that Keith can be more independent in the community. Keith and his family know they are truly blessed by the thoughtfulness, generosity and love bestowed upon them. With prayers and support from family and friends, they are hopeful they can continue to take on challenges (physical, mental, financial) that are going to be part of their future.
