A Mother & Daughter in Crisis — Please Help Us Rebuild

Hi, my name is Katti Bull, and I’m a single mom to my amazing daughter, Ashlynn. We’ve been through more than I ever imagined possible, and I’m finally at a point where I have to ask for help — because we truly have nowhere else to turn.

Right before COVID hit, Ashlynn and I were in a serious rollover car accident. Since then, I’ve had multiple injuries and surgeries, and I’m still struggling with medical issues that make it impossible for me to work. I’ve been trying to get approved for Social Security Disability (SSDI) for over 5 years, and while I was finally approved, most of the backpay was taken by the state because I needed Medicaid and food stamps during that time.

We are currently staying in temporary housing with my mom in Hudsonville, but shelters refused to take us due to Ashlynn’s medical needs — they said she was a liability.

We recently got some good news: Ashlynn has been accepted into a special needs program at a school in Mecosta County that is absolutely perfect for her. But there’s a catch — she can’t start unless we have stable housing in that county.

And that’s where I’m stuck. I’ve called 211, I’ve applied to every agency I can find, I’ve asked and asked — but there’s been no real help. I’m doing everything I can, but I still can’t secure a safe place for us to live. This has taken a huge toll on me mentally and emotionally, and trying to raise and care for Ashlynn on my own while battling my own health challenges has been incredibly hard.

I don’t take asking for help lightly — I’ve prayed and prayed about this. But now I need to ask.

We need help covering moving costs, security deposit, and a few months of housing support until my SSDI is fully in place and Ashlynn can safely start her new school.
