Support Karon's Battle with Cancer!

The Diagnosis: Karon was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 infiltrating ductal carcinoma in her left breast and surrounding lymph nodes. Karon handled this news in true Karon fashion and hit it head on, full of positive energy. She consulted a top notch cancer team and together they determined the best course of action. In October, she will begin a 5 month course of chemo treatments followed by surgery and of course, recovery!
The Backstory: To know Karon is to love her. Enthusiastic teacher. Supportive mentor. Loyal friend. Patient mother. Dedicated runner. Loving daughter. Friendly. Trustworthy. Knowledgeable. Wise. Funny. Positive. Strong. Fierce. She is all of these things and so much more.
As a long time RRISD family member, Karon has worn may hats and filled many roles. As a teacher, mentor and coach she was a shining example and a voice for teachers. She has a heart for English Language Learners and has championed their cause throughout the years in every role to ensure their needs are being met. She believes every student can learn and thinks outside the box to make that a reality. She challenges and motivates and does what's best for kids.
And just as it is impossible to sum Karon up in words, it is impossible to count the number of lives she has touched over the years. Students she has taught. Teachers she has trained. Friends and family she has loved. I was one of the lucky ones. The years I taught alongside Karon are some of my favorites to this day. I credit her with helping to shape me into the educator and person I am today. I call her my mentor, but more importantly I get to call her my friend, my family. She has come through for me more times than I can count, and I bet there are a lot of people who feel the same way.
So here we are. It’s our turn. Our turn to show our friendship, our love, our hope, our appreciation, our support. I challenge you to give. If Karon has impacted your life, taught you something, bought you a beer, covered your duty, been a friend, loved your kid, made you laugh or ever just been a light in your day- I challenge you to support her in any way you can.
Cancer treatment can cost up to $10,000 per month and on average an insured patients pay approximately 20%-30% out of pocket. Your donation will go toward helping cover this treatment so that Karon can beat this terrible disease and get back to her life.
People always say that every bit helps and it is so true. If all 630 of Karon’s Facebook friends gave just $16 each we would reach our goal. Let’s make it happen!
