Support Kakuma's Refugee Filmmakers

Hi - I am an anthropologist who has worked with a fantastic group of people in Kakuma refugee camp, and through our work they started the organization Photofilm For Change. I am funding raising for this group, and here is their story:

Photofilm for Change is a media and arts refugee-led organization based in Kakuma refugee camp, Kenya. Kakuma refugee camp is a home to more than 250,000 refugees from more ten nationalities and the camp has been in existence for more than 3 decades. Photofilm for Change aims to produce films about different social issues that affect refugees, and provide a center for workshopping and presenting art produced by other refugees in the camp. This community-based organization has been initiated by a group of refugees from different nationalities staying in Kakuma refugee camp after they successfully produced their first film, The Bridge (watch the film here: https://filmfreeway.com/projects/3087847) in collaboration with Prof Laura Kunreuther from Bard College, about the conditions of labor for interpreters in the camp.

The group is close to finishing their second film on “incentive labor” (a form of labor unique to refugees, who are technically not allowed to work without a work permit). But they have had a lot of difficulty accessing adequate film equipment needed for post-production.

We are initiating this fundraising campaign to get enough funds to purchase full set of film equipment and laptops for editing to enable the group to continue telling more stories, provide a space for other refugee artists to workshop and showcase their work, and provide training for fellow refugees on to make films. Since the money raised here cannot be sent directly to Kenya, I (Laura) will be withdrawing the money from my bank account and will send it directly to t Photofilm via wire transfer.
