The Farley Open is an annual golf outing started by Bob Farley Sr. as a way to gather friends and family for a fun weekend of golf. The weekend has turned into more than golf and for over the last 10 years, the outing has chosen a family struggling to support financially. The current golf outing is led by Bob Farley Jr. and a group of dedicated family and friends in the greater Philadelphia area. ALL of the funds raised from the golf outing goes directly to the family during a check presentation after the golf outing in early October. The family is free to use the funds for whatever needs they may have at the time.
This year we are honored to select one of our long-time members, Mike Heaney's brother John as our recipient. Late last year and early this year John was having issues swallowing and having constant acid reflux. An endoscopy found that he had 2 tumors in his esophagus. After meeting with surgeons at Penn they decided to proceed with chemotherapy and afterword radical removal and reconstruction of his esophagus. He has had some additional complications and was hospitalized for most of June and the prognosis has changed. Surgery is no longer an option and once he gains a little strength he will undergo more chemo and radiation.
Yesterday, the committee had the great opportunity to connect with of Mike, his wife Sheila, and Dave and Janet Reeser, John’s sister. With huge smiles on their faces, Mike and Janet told us all their brother John. At 6’7, John is the tallest of the Heaney’s with a very big, charismatic personality to match. He’s an avid Eagles fan who met his loving wife of 19 years, Chris, at Veteran Stadium while she was pouring him beers. Today, they live in Sewell, NJ and have 2 sons, Johnny 16 and Daniel 12, who both play all sorts of sports. The family shares a common love for Disney and have made it a priority to visit at least once a year, sometimes twice. John’s also a big fan of Christmas and insists on keeping a tree in his basement year-round that he decorates for every possible occasion. He’s a generous man who is always the first one willing to help out friends and neighbors with whatever they may need. He’s is an extremely dedicated worker, who has spent over 18 years of long days and late nights at the Sunoco refinery, and has always done so much to support Chris and his boys. Mike and Janet also emphasized what an amazing brother and son John is and how strong their family’s bond is and has always been. They take care of each other, especially in times of need. As Mike put it, “there’s nothing we won’t do” for John.
There is no way to know what the future is both financially and emotionally for this beautiful family and they need all the support we can offer.
100% of every dollar we raise will go directly to the Heaney family to help them through a very tough time.
