Jennifer Stewart is my wife, and she is a wonderful stepmother to my 4 children. She is also the owner and operator of Wellborn Upstate, a midwifery practice that serves the community of the Greater Greenville Area of South Carolina. She has served hundreds of families locally, helping them to bring to fruition their desire to have their children born in their homes. Jennifer has a wonderful reputation of love, service and respect. 
 
On Sunday evening April 20, it was discovered Jennifer had a 3cm aneurysm in her brain - specifically in the part of the brain that controls speech. Immediately we were transferred to Greenville Memorial Hospital. Monday April 21, she underwent surgery to repair the aneurysm. During the procedure she developed brain clots and suffered a massive stroke. Additionally, she had a secondary vessel that stopped receiving blood flow. 
 
She survived the surgery and stroke, but not without consequence. Her speech is severely hindered as you might expect and she can say very few words. Those things she can say, such as "water" and "more" are very toddler-like. Thankfully she has no problems with motor skills on the left side of her body, but she cannot move her right arm and there is very little movement of her right leg. Her cognition is pretty good, but it is obvious she isn't at full capacity. 
 
We have a very long road ahead of us with both physical therapy and speech rehab. I know she is very determined, which will yield great benefits in rehab. 
 
We live a holistic lifestyle, and as such we did not carry insurance. Insurance or no, nothing can prepare you for a moment like this. We will be inundated with hospitalization and rehab financial obligations: 3 CT scans, an MRI, a major surgery, a week in the neuro-ICU, plus more to come. More than anything I covet your prayers for my wife and her recovery.
