After suffering many years with diminishing kidney function from a genetic disorder, his doctor just informed him that he should prepare to start dialysis immediately. Although he's known for years that his kidneys were failing, it is now time to use dialysis to clean his blood until he can receive a kidney transplant as soon as possible.
