When governing officials survey risks for extractive projects, as the illegal occupying settler state of “Canada”, they intentionally ignore the the socio political effects an influx of wealth and non indigenous, predominantly male, workers has on vulnerable and remote communities. This creates an environment that fosters more violence. Among the proposed projects fronting this degredation of indigenous lands and bodies are TransCanadas Coastal GasLink, North Montney Mainline, Kinder Morgan, and Enbridges Line 3 and Northern gateway pipelines.
In North Dakota, the man camps created during the Bakken oil boom drastically increased the levels of violent crime perpetrated against women and girls — and particularly native women and girls.
This created a 7.3 % increase in overall crime included 23,647 arrests of men for everything from forcible rape, prostitution, and other sexual offences. Prosecuted rapes in the state increased 17% as a direct result of this aswell.
Among the youth planning travel are those with experience hearing these horror stories and seeing how they’ve impacted the culture and environment of their communities.
No more third party degredation of indigenous lands in the name of colonial profit!
