Support Immigrant Families Impacted by Hurricane Ida

If you’ve lived through a natural disaster, you know that the first on the scene to help rebuild your home were immigrant workers. Who will help immigrant workers rebuild our lives?

Immigrants have been the front-line essential workers throughout the pandemic, the first to be hit by the virus and its economic impacts and the last to receive government services: we’re not eligible for unemployment, or a stimulus check, even when we have US-born children.

Now, we’ve been hit by hurricane Ida. To qualify for FEMA relief, you have to have a Social Security number or be the parent of someone with one - something that can be unreachable in a lifetime for thousands of our friends and neighbors. With Ida, FEMA relief is skewed towards the rich - providing money for damages to homeowners and largely leaving out renters who sheltered in place and evacuees who took on astronomical hotel costs to protect their families’ lives. Rent is due, and we’ve spent all we have just to survive: many in our community are facing eviction.

Immigrants are the backbone of the economy, and we have been here for you personally - caring for your children and elderly loved ones, working in your businesses, harvesting and cooking the food delivered socially-distantly to your door. Will you be here for us?

Para calificar por apoyo de parte de FEMA , tienes que tener un número Social o ser padre de alguien que tiene social - algo que muchos de nuestros vecinos y amigos en sus vidas nunca alcanzarán. En Ida, el asistencia de FEMA favorece a los ricos - brindan dinero a propietarios para daños a sus casas y dejan atrás a los inquilinos que se refugiaron en casa y los evacuados que pagaron gastos de hoteles astronómicos para proteger la vida de sus familias. Ya se debe la renta, y hemos gastado todo lo que tenemos para apenas sobrevivir: muchos en nuestro comunidad están enfrentado con el desalojo.
