Hurricane Florence Devastates Farm

Donation protected
Humble Roots Farm is a locally owned and operated family farm in Wilmington, NC which was devastated by Hurricane Florence that recently hit North Carolina. (before and after photos below)

The Stenersen Family
Being a small family farm, Humble Roots has been a community staple in the locally-sourced, organic, non-GMO, farm to table food market since 2013. Owned and operated by Kyle and Katelyn Stenersen, their passion is to be stewards of God’s creation and grow good, quality, nutritionally-dense food for their community. This sweet family of 5, with another on the way, need your help.

Hurricane Florence
Hurricane Florence caused the destruction of many homes and businesses across southeastern North Carolina and beyond. Florence was anticipated to be the most powerful hurricane ever to hit the Carolinas. Thankfully, the strength of the storm weakened from a Category 4 to a Category 2 just before it made landfall. Still, with 100+mph winds, over 10ft storm surge and a record-breaking rainfall of 35+ inches, widespread emergency spread across all of North Carolina.

Humble Roots Farm was one of the many places that were decimated by the raging storm.

During Hurricane Florence’s heavy rains, winds and storm surges, Kyle Stenersen and other volunteers worked tirelessly every day through the storm to save the farm’s crops, animals and structures. Sadly, many of the farm’s animals were killed during storm and crops were completely destroyed. They have lost over 100 turkeys that were being raised for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. More than 50 chickens perished. These losses directly impacted the Stenersen's livelihood as well as the local food economy.

Thankfully, none of their pigs were lost, despite their 5 acre forest sanctuary being 99% flooded.

The animal shelters and barn were severely damaged and much time and resources are needed for clean up and repairs.

The Stenersen’s home on the farm, though not receiving much damage, was flooded all around and underneath the structure as you can see below.

Your Support
The outpouring of support for Humble Roots Farm has been incredible. Volunteers have been working everyday to help clear trees and debris, and keep the animals safe and fed. But more help is needed to offset the financial burden this farm is facing. All donations received will go towards replacing and rebuilding the barn and other infrastructure, rebuilding animal shelters, and cover revenue lost from the loss of animals and crops.
