Hugo Mejia Murguia is a dedicated father of three, a committed husband and proud resident of San Rafael, CA for over 15 years. The whole family is actively engaged in the community, regularly volunteering at their schools and through community organizations. His family has been involved in story sharing, cooking and community building and his children help at their elementary and middle schools with translations for families at whole school events. Hugo has been an asset and model community member to every institution and group he has been a part of. Hugo is currently pursuing his GED and works in construction. He has no criminal history or record.
On Wednesday, May 3, 2017, Hugo was given a new work assignment for a hospital on Travis Airforce Base in Fairfield, CA. In order to begin work, Hugo was asked to present an ID to enter the Air Force Base. When Hugo presented his California Driver’s Licensewas detained by two military officials and later arrested by ICE.
Hugo was held in a detention facility in Elk Grove, CA for 203 days before he was finally granted a bond from a judge on November 21st, thanks to his courage, faith, and determination and to the commitment and support of his neighbors and community.
Hugo's case is still pending at the 9th circuit and our commitment to him and his family must remain stronger than ever.
