Stand with the 56 victims of Hogar Virgen de la Asunción Fire In Guatemala

On March 8th, 2017 a fire occurred at a state-run centre for children and youth, Hogar Seguro Virgen de la Asunción, after the girls participated in a protest demanding better living conditions. Tragically, the centre’s security refused to release the girls from a locked room and 41 girls were killed in the fire and 15 other girls survived the incident with severe burns, amputations, as well as significant psychological trauma. On the 4th anniversary of this event, these victims and families require support and assistance in coping with the residual impacts of this horrific event.

Gender-based violence in Guatemala continues to impact these families. Most recently on February 21st with the murder of María Ramírez, mother of Wendy Vividor, who was killed in the fire. We are asking for financial support for the 8 Tijax Collective, which has been working tirelessly to support the survivors, the families of the victims, and to bring awareness and hopefully justice to this senseless crime. The funds will be used to cover the cost of the organization of commemoration activities which brings the families of the victims together (vigil materials, transportation, accommodation, and food for the families) as well as ongoing financial assistance for basic medical needs and psychological support for the survivors.

We denounce the assassination of María Ramírez, and the systematic gendered-based violence in Guatemala, and around the globe. We stand in solidarity with the victims of this tragic event, and their families.

Who we are

As engaged members of the PSAC labour movement, we participated in the 2020 Education in Action delegation to Guatemala and were honoured to meet the resilient women leading the 8 Tijax Collective https://www.facebook.com/8tijax, a grass-root solidarity group supporting the the victims and families of the Hogar Seguro Virgen de la Asunción fire. One year later, and in light of the 4th anniversary since the fire, we stand in solidarity with the 56 girls and their families.
