Support Heiny Srour films

Support the safeguarding of two of the most unique and extraordinary films about the political struggles of women in the Arab world !

First woman from the Third World to be selected at the Cannes Film Festival, Heiny Srour’s THE HOUR OF LIBERATION HAS ARRIVED (1974) documents the most radical page of the Arab-Islamic World: a secular, democratic and feminist social experience which took place in the “Liberated Area’’ of Dhofar/Sultanate of Oman. In order to shoot this unique documentary, she walked with her team 500 miles of desert and mountains, under bombardment by the British Royal Air Force.

LEILA AND THE WOLVES (1984), her other major work, is a multi-award winner feature film, shot under the bombs of the Lebanese Civil War and sprouting Syrian Civil War.  It unveils the hidden histories of women in struggle, in particular in Palestine and Lebanon, by weaving an aesthetically and politically ambitious tableau of history, folklore and archival footage.

Thanks to the support of the French Cinémathèque, the CNC and the French Ministry of Culture, a digital restored version of THE HOUR OF LIBERATION was produced in 2019.

However, part of the expenses have remained unsubsidized and are personally borne by Heiny.  If these expenses are left unpaid, this would result in blocking her work in the lab and prevents further screenings of her films.

Please give generously in this crowdfunding effort to champion Heiny Srour's extraordinary work and give her films the visibility and resonance that they deserve.
