Support Harlem Family to Rebuild After House Fire

On November 1st, Delia and their family lost their apartment of almost 8 years to a fire that ravaged most of their building. On top of experiencing the tremendous loss of their home and the vast majority of their belongings, including clothing, shoes, identifying documents and other basic necessities, the family has also been devastated by the loss of their cat, who they were unable to save in the fire. Delia, their partner Elaine, their younger sister Caro, mother Maria, and her partner David are currently being put up at a hotel by Red Cross, however this is only temporary, and they are currently facing the emotional toll and financial burden of homeslessness during a particularly precarious time. To make matters even worse, Elaine’s car’s front door was smashed and pulled off by one of the fire trucks that arrived, and it is uncertain how long it will take for the city to cover the repair costs.
Delia and three generations of their family have called Harlem and the Bronx home for over 30 years. Like many folks, they were already suffering the brunt of gentrification, landlord neglect, unemployment during a pandemic, and food stamp bureaucratic mistakes. Delia is a rock in their community and continuously shows up for other poor, working-class, Black, brown, and queer people. Many of us who have crossed paths with Delia in NYC, at Wesleyan, or elsewhere have witnessed and experienced firsthand the immense love and care and support that they extend to any and everyone in the struggle.
This GoFundMe will help support Delia and their family at a time when they are suffering the traumatic loss of their cat and the apartment where they created memories and built a home over the past 8+ years. The funds raised will cover the costs for: clothes, shoes, and coats for 5 people, food and other basic necessities, ID-replacement (including green card replacement which is particularly costly), technology (vital for the family’s efforts in education, organizing and other work, especially during the pandemic), permanent housing and moving costs (first month rent, security deposit, furniture replacement, etc).

El primero de Noviembre Delia y su familia perdieron su apartamento de casi 8 años en un incendio que dejó destruido casi el edificio entero. Adicionalmente a la pérdida tremenda de su hogar y la gran mayoría de sus pertenencias, incluyendo ropa, zapatos, documentos de identificación, y otras necesidades básicas, la familia también ha sido devastada por la pérdida de su querido gato, quien ellos no pudieron salvar en el incendio.
