Max Sano founded The Greenzine (greenzine.org) in September 2020 as a biweekly newsletter within his college's student-run environmental club. The initial newsletter highlighted important stories about climate change within the mainstream and independent media spaces. Max noticed a lack of youth voices (people under 30 years old), not to mention youth perspectives from the Majority World, in not just climate action and the broader environmentalist movement but also the media and government institutions deliberating over potential solutions.
With this in mind, The Greenzine expanded not just to offer the newsletter but also a virtual hub fully organized in the spirit of a grassroots, independent journalism collective. With the support of pro bono legal services, Max just finalized and submitted a 501(3)(c) nonprofit application to support a global team of changemakers. Our organization is by youth, for people and the planet!
Coming up on our second anniversary, this is what our impact looks like:
- Three thousand followers across our social media accounts.
- Content has reached over 128,000 accounts and people between our website and social media presence.
- Our work has reached audiences in roughly 56 countries.
- Published 22 newsletters.
- Amplified the voices of over four dozen youth across nearly a dozen countries (Papa New Guinea, Iraq, United States, Mexico, United Kingdom, Egypt, Finland, Ghana, Malaysia, Ireland, Kenya, and Pakistan)
- Published 48 pieces of multimedia content.
- Coordinated/spoke in over half a dozen virtual panels and Instagram live streams on a range of topics, including environmental racism within local food systems, youth advocacy and the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals, food systems and planetary health, and navigating postgraduate life in the public health and environmental job sectors.
- Established a partners and resources page to expand our impact and community while also amplifying projects, movements and causes in alignment with our mission statement.
- Coordinated a student-run garden in southeastern Pennsylvania operating with agricultural practices rooted in agroecology and regeneration (e.g., raised beds, cover crops, multi-cropping) through Franklin & Marshall College.
The foundation of The Greenzine is to challenge gatekeeping of knowledge by making all of our content open source with ZERO paywalls. As we get more support from you, our community, we will be able to offer more of what we are already doing, as well as have the ability to begin to:
- Pay for nonprofit certification.
- Host in-person events/workshops that connect people with various members and leaders of different organizations within the environmentalist movement, emphasizing amplifying and raising funds for organizations rooted in environmental justice.
- Raising and donating funds for mutual aid, community fridges and other environmental justice causes.
- Coordinate food donations, as well as the development of sustainable and ethical food systems, within local food economies and communities in New York City.
- Host virtual training workshops and webinars for our contributors.
- Begin to translate our work into other languages.
