<div>I've written this thing many times, thought about it in my head, with my partner, with my therapist. There is no easy way to share this, it is also not the end of the world. So here it goes…

<div>I have been unwell for far too long. It's been beyond difficult in every possible way, but I am determined to fight until I get my life back. I'm writing this because I need your help. Some of my close friends and colleagues may know that I have been battling Lyme disease for some 10 years. If you don't know what that is, I will leave resources below, and you can also follow me on my Instagram account <a href="https://www.instagram.com/okanaga/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">okanaga</a>, where I am sharing my story and have been advocating for Lyme awareness since I learned about its existence. Lyme disease is a strange alien thing; it is an infection that does not want you gone, it wants you to stay alive, to be a host as long as possible, destroying you slowly from the inside out, and that is, sadly, not an exaggeration. Lyme+: Borrelia Burgdorferi &amp; Co (bartonella, babesia, ehrlichia, rickettsia, anaplasma, mycoplasma…) are a gang of pathogens that get into your bloodstream through the bite of an infected tick. It's said that one tick can carry up to 8 different pathogens simultaneously (bacteria, virus, parasites…). It is known that Borrelia Burgdorferi degrades your bones, eats away the collagen in your body, while Bartonella goes after your connective tissue, the lining of your organs, they get into your bladder, your eyes, your brain. It's a systemic and chronic infection, infecting all your cells, in turn creating symptoms throughout YOUR ENTIRE BODY.

<div>But, this post is not meant to be a scary movie; it's just meant to share some of what my life has been, and the reason why I am asking for your support. 10 years of Lyme is a very long time, out of which 8 were undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, untreated. During this time, Lyme &amp; Co wreaked havoc on my body and mind. My autonomic nervous system has been affected as well, it's called dysautonomia, the chronic infection also <strong>degraded my cervical spine to a great extent</strong>. Remember the bone and connective tissue? The diagnosis is not good: I have two herniated discs pressing my spinal cord, preventing cerebrospinal fluid from flowing properly, nerve damage, a ruptured ligament, bones fusing and instability – and a Chiari Malformation. All this is causing me some of the most excruciating pain I have ever felt, while further damaging my nerves and affecting my balance and motor skills. As a consequence, my hands and fingers aren't working well, my face goes numb, I have nausea, dizziness, and I can't sleep. As if the pain from Lyme and all the symptoms weren't enough, the situation with my cervical spine is likely creating pressure on my brain and giving me symptoms of Chiari Malformation. I'm sure you don't know what that is, so I will also leave some resources below, because it is not a well-known condition either and people need to know about this! Chiari is basically a herniation of the cerebellum tonsils, however mine is not so extreme, apparently, and we are hoping that by decompressing and improving stability of my cervical spine and spinal cord, these symptoms will lessen, but I will not know this until I have recovered from this disc replacement surgery.

<div>Hence, the next and best course of action for my overall well-being is this surgery and 12 weeks of rehabilitation. Very broadly, the surgery goes like this: they will make an incision in the neck, the two herniated discs will be replaced by a prosthesis, the extended bones trying to fuse (called osteocytes) will be cut. It is a delicate procedure with an incision on the neck that requires careful pre and post-surgery care, especially given Lyme disease, which is an inflammatory, systemic condition. Needless to say, I am taking all the necessary precautions so that the surgery and my recovery go smoothly and I don't end up having a bad Lyme relapse.

<div>This is all so incredibly expensive; 8 years of misdiagnosis, dozens of doctors' appointments, countless medications, and hundreds of tests later. 5 weeks in a clinic, 2 years of constant treatment, allopathic and traditional therapies, more doctors' appointments, a never-ending list of tests, medicines, supplements, gadgets, and also a minor surgery in between. Many of these treatments have been called “alternative” in today's terribly broken healthcare systems, so they are expensive, long-term therapies that are not covered by insurance. Lyme is an expensive and long haul condition that no insurance will cover in today’s profit-driven world. Hey, until not long ago, some doctors, people, systems…didn't BELIEVE it was real, but that's a story for another time…These 8+2 years have cost me a lot of things, including money. I have spent all my savings; every single penny I make (which costs me a great deal of energy), my partner’s, my family’s. I am out of it, and I can't work as much these days because of the pain, fatigue and headaches. Being at the computer is agony; the brain fog is unbelievable. If you have seen me recently, whether for work, at an event, or in pictures and have thought, “<em>oh she looks so normal, she looks absolutely fine, why would she need surgery, and why is she asking for money?</em>” I want you to know that I get it; my diagnoses are pretty much invisible, which is one of the many reasons these were undiagnosed for so long. I look fine, I am most definitely not. That one time you saw me, I had been preparing for the event for weeks, and it will take me some more weeks to recover. If you see pictures on social media, you need to know that I am trying my hardest and it's not easy.

<div><strong>THE ASK: TL:DR</strong>
</div>
<div>I have endured a lot of pain. Lyme is a VERY painful condition; we can feel the bacteria eating away our bones, damaging our nerves, and it HURTS. It's not only the pain, though, the cascade of symptoms fills more than 3 pages. After consulting several neurologists and neurosurgeons, the choice I was presented with is pretty clear-cut. Either I go through an eight-hour surgery to fix my spine, or I endure a lifetime of intensifying pain and debilitating symptoms. What this surgery would mean to me is indescribable; it will mean that I can get some of my life back– if I can do what I love with 50% less pain, I will take it as a BIG WIN.

<div>He estado enferma por demasiado tiempo. Ha sido difícil en todos los sentidos posibles, pero estoy decidida a luchar hasta recuperar mi vida. Escribo esto porque necesito tu ayuda. Algunos de mis amigxs cercanos y colegas saben que he estado batallando contra la enfermedad de Lyme desde hace unos 10 años. Si no sabes qué es, voy a dejar recursos más abajo y también puedes seguirme en mi cuenta de Instagram: <a href="https://www.instagram.com/okanaga/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">okanaga</a> , donde comparto mi historia y he estado abogando por la concientización de Lyme desde que supe de su existencia. La enfermedad de Lyme es algo extraño, casi que fuera de este mundo: es una infección que no quiere que te mueras, quiere que sigas con vida, que seas un huésped el mayor tiempo posible, destruyéndote lentamente de adentro hacia afuera, y tristemente eso no es una exageración. Lyme &amp; Co: Borrelia burgdorferi y compañía (bartonella, babesia, ehrlichia, rickettsia, anaplasma, mycoplasma…) son un grupo de patógenos que entran al torrente sanguíneo a través de la mordedura de una garrapata infectada. Se dice que una sola garrapata puede portar hasta 8 patógenos diferentes al mismo tiempo (bacterias, virus, parásitos…). Se sabe que Borrelia burgdorferi degrada los huesos, se come el colágeno del cuerpo, mientras que Bartonella ataca el tejido conectivo, el revestimiento de los órganos; se mete en la vejiga, los ojos, el cerebro. Es una infección sistémica y crónica que infecta todas las células y, como consecuencia, crea síntomas en TODO EL CUERPO.

<div>Pero esto no pretende ser una película de terror; el punto es compartir un poco de lo que ha sido mi vida y la razón por la cual estoy pidiendo tu apoyo. Diez años con Lyme es muchísimo tiempo, de los cuales 8 fueron un sinfín de diagnósticos erróneos y tratamientos fallidos. Durante todo ese tiempo, Lyme &amp; Co causaron estragos en mi cuerpo y en mi mente. Mi sistema nervioso autónomo también se vio afectado; esto se llama disautonomía. <strong>La infección crónica también degradó mi columna cervical.</strong> ¿Recuerdan los huesos y el tejido conectivo? El diagnóstico no es bueno: tengo dos discos herniados presionando la médula espinal, lo que impide que el líquido cefalorraquídeo fluya correctamente; daño nervioso, un ligamento roto, huesos que se están fusionando, inestabilidad, y una malformación de Chiari. Todo esto me provoca uno de los dolores más insoportables que he sentido en mi vida, y además, sigue dañando mis nervios, afectando mi equilibrio y habilidades motoras. Como consecuencia, mis manos y dedos no funcionan bien, se me duerme la cara, tengo náuseas, mareos y no puedo dormir, en fin. Como si el dolor del Lyme y todos sus síntomas no fueran suficientes, la situación de mi columna cervical probablemente está generando presión en mi cerebro y dándome síntomas de la malformación de Chiari. Seguramente no sabes qué es eso tampoco, así que también dejaré recursos más abajo, porque no es una condición muy conocida y ¡la gente necesita saberlo! Básicamente, Chiari es una herniación de las amígdalas del cerebelo; en mi caso no es tan extrema, aparentemente, y tenemos la esperanza de que al descomprimir y mejorar la estabilidad de mi columna cervical y la médula espinal, estos síntomas se quiten o disminuyan. Pero no lo sabré hasta que me recupere de esta cirugía de reemplazo de discos.

<div>Por lo tanto, el siguiente y mejor paso para mi bienestar general es esta cirugía y 12 semanas de rehabilitación. A grandes rasgos, la cirugía consiste en lo siguiente: harán una incisión en el cuello, los dos discos herniados serán reemplazados por prótesis y se cortarán los huesos que se han extendido y están intentando fusionarse (osteofitos). Es un procedimiento delicado, con una incisión en el cuello que requiere de muchos cuidados antes y después de la cirugía, especialmente considerando la enfermedad de Lyme, que es una condición inflamatoria y sistémica. Por supuesto que estoy tomando todas las medidas necesarias para que la cirugía y mi recuperación transcurran bien y no termine con una recaída fuerte de Lyme.

<div>Todo esto es increíblemente costoso: 8 años de diagnósticos erróneos, decenas de consultas médicas, incontables medicamentos y cientos de estudios. 5 semanas en una clínica, 2 años de tratamiento constante, terapias alopáticas y tradicionales, más consultas médicas, una lista interminable de estudios, medicinas, suplementos, dispositivos y, además, una cirugía menor de por medio. Muchos de estos tratamientos son considerados “alternativos” en los sistemas de salud tan absurdos que tenemos hoy en día, son terapias costosas y de largo plazo. Lyme crónico es, por lo tanto, una condición muy costosa y que ningún seguro médico cubre. Que les digo…hasta no hace mucho, algunos médicos, personas y sistemas, ¡ni siquiera CREÍAN que fuera real! Pero bueno, esa es otra historia…

<div>Estos 8+2 años me han costado muchísimas cosas, incluyendo dinero. He gastado todos mis ahorros; cada centavo que gano de mi trabajo (lo cual me cuesta muchísima energía), los de mi pareja y los de mi familia. Ya no tengo más, y no puedo trabajar mucho estos días debido al dolor, la fatiga y los dolores de cabeza. Estar frente a la computadora es agonizante; la niebla mental es tremenda. Si me has visto recientemente, ya sea por trabajo, en algún evento o en fotos, y has pensado: <em>“se ve súper normal, se ve perfectamente bien, ¿por qué necesitaría una cirugía y por qué está pidiendo dinero?</em>”, quiero que sepas que lo entiendo. Mis diagnósticos son totalmente invisibles, lo cual es una de las muchas razones por las que no se detectaron durante tanto tiempo. Me veo bien, pero definitivamente no lo estoy. Esa vez que me viste, estuve preparándome durante semanas para poder asistir, y me tomará varias semanas más recuperarme. Si ves fotos en redes sociales, necesitas saber que le estoy echando muchísimas ganas y que no es nada fácil.

<div><strong>LA PETICIÓN: TL;DR</strong>
</div>
<div>He aguantado muchísimo dolor—Lyme es una condición MUY dolorosa; podemos sentir cómo las bacterias se comen nuestros huesos y dañan nuestros nervios, y cómo DUELE. Pero no es solo el dolor: la avalancha de síntomas llena más de tres páginas. Después de consultar con varios neurólogos y neurocirujanos, la opción que me presentaron es bastante clara: o paso por una cirugía de ocho horas para arreglar mi columna, o me aguanto una vida de dolor intenso y síntomas cada vez más debilitantes. Lo que esta cirugía significa para mí es indescriptible; es poder recuperar una parte de mi vida. Si puedo hacer lo que amo con un 50% menos de dolor, lo consideraré una GRAN VICTORIA.
