On Saturday, April 28th, 4 year old Georgia Tauber was viciously attacked by a dog. Georgia is currently in the ICU at Westchester Medical Center. She went through an eight hour surgery on Sunday April 29th and is expected to need several more. As of Tuesday May 1st, she has had two MRI's and multiple skin grafts. She has been in and out of a medically induced coma and is on a breathing machine. As of now the timetable for her return home is unclear, the Tauber’s have been given access to the Ronald McDonald house for the next 30 days.
The Tauber’s are members of the Minisink community. Her mom Holly works as a substitute teacher in the Minisink school district, her father Kenneth serves at the Stewart Air National Guard Base and her sister Emma is a 1st grader at Minisink Elementary. Holly is currently commuting back and forth to Westchester in order to spend her days with Georgia and her nights with Emma. Kenneth is staying in the hospital room and tries to get occasional rest at the Ronald McDonald house. Her grandmother also suffered serious injuries on the hands while saving Georgia's life during the attack.
In addition to the long medical recovery that Georgia is facing and the emotional toll that the family will experience, they will also be experiencing numerous financial burdens and time away from work.

UPDATES:
April 30th, morning:
-Georgia is very responsive to touch and voice today.
-She knows when her Minnie Mouse is gone.
-She will stay in coma for her safety from pulling the tubes out and pain.
-She has had a 101 fever that has wavered. Meds were given for it.
-We are waiting for another MRI to monitor her spine situation but it is more complicated to happen with a breathing machine.
April 30, Evening:
-Georgia’s temperature is back to normal.
-She is swelling again from fluids
-She was awake for 10 minutes so far.
-She was able to tell us she was in pain with nods and wiggled her feet to perform for Emma.
-Good that we can tell that she is pain
-Bad because she has the pain and tubes.
-She told me that she has heard me this whole time and I fought back tears.
-Ronald McDonald House has given me a room for 30 days. So now I have a better place to sleep and I’m 300’ away.
May 1, morning:
-She keeps breaking her sedative to pull at the various things on her.
-At midnight, she quickly grabbed for the airtube first. The nurse actually pulled a muscle racing the few feet to her.
-They restrained her with my permission.
-In the last 4 hours, tried to talk only to start crying because she can’t tell us. Charades sucks.
-The morning checks and bandage changes at 7 really set her off. They gave her more sedative to help.
-No MRI yet. Their schedule is very full. I have everyone of her doctors trying to bump her up the list.
UPDATE: I just sat in on the doctors’ meeting for her. Her surgery is now tomorrow afternoon.
May 1, morning:
-I used my ways of persuasion to get Georgia next in line for the MRI.
-There is already word of another surgery past the current one.
-After tomorrow’s surgery, the airtube will come out and collar off.
May 1- Evening:
-MRI is behind us. She has woken up 3 times since 4:30. Dosage up again.
-The doctors are impressed with her resistance bit no longer shocked.
-Holly will be with me for a few days so I am not always on call.
May 1- Update:
-The MRI came back clean! The air thought to be on her spine is just in the skin!
May 2, Morning:
-The hard collar came off and our little girl is snoring again!☺️
-She is complaining about the pain in her butt. So, the Meds went up.
-Georgia’s second surgery will tell us a lot more about her condition now that she has had some time to heal from the first one.
-With luck, the air tube will come out if the following surgery will be further out.
May 2, 1000:
-Surgery moved up to 1030!
May 2, Afternoon:
-Georgia is out of Surgery and we have great news!
-The Surgeon said he was very surprised by the amount of tissue that was still alive (25%) on her Gluteus Maximus.
-Only tiny snips to remove.
-The Gluteus Medius was perfectly functioning.
-No 3rd surgery anytime soon!
-The airtube is coming out today
-Healing time here for a few more weeks.
May 2, Evening:
-Airtube and the stomach acid removal nose tube out.
-Full face mask on for a few hours before she transitions to a smaller O2 setup. It is the natural process and she is doing great at it!
-The first thing she did was rub her nose a full 30 seconds. Must have been killing her!
-First word was “Mommy”.
-It will be a few more weeks here, but not in ICU for too much longer.
-Maybe another week or two for ICU.
May 3, morning:
-Georgia is breathing room air.
-She wants “apple juice” and “McDonald’s”
(meaning chicken nugget happy meal).
-Colostomy bag working correctly
-Now on clear fluids, starting with water.
-There is some age regression, but it is expected.
-The wounds are healing.
May 3, Evening:
-She went from water, to Apple juice and finally orange jello in a matter of hours.
-She has only had one dose of Morphine
-They only give what she needs when she is in pain.
-She is down to 1 IV, the pulse/ox laser, and the blood pressure cuff; all on her legs, under a blanket.
-I showed her the leg wounds because she thought she could get up. She cried.
-The main doctor says he wants her to see the Hospital Psychiatrist to help her cope as we have noticed some new “fears”.
May 4:
-Solid foods day!
-The kitchen made Georgia chicken pieces and fries.
-She is only eating small amounts. We have a very pleased 4 year old. (Relativity)
-The whole family is here and the 4 of us are spending time together.
-Emma is a big moral booster for Georgia. A simple hand hold makes a difference to her.
