Support Gary's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
On Dec 4th, 2017 Gary was admitted to St. Joseph's hospital in Gravelbourg Sask for severe flu like symptoms and a fever of 104°F.

Over the next few weeks he underwent testing and treatment  of antibiotics. On Dec 19th he had 17 teeth extracted, under local anaesthetic. The internal medicine specialist felt his teeth were the source of the infection and possibly causing sepsis complications and delirium.

Gary's condition worsened and he lost the ability to swallow. This caused him dehydration, weight loss and extreme malaise. On Jan 4th he was non-responsive and ambulanced  to a neurologist 3 hrs away at Regina General Hospital.

Seven grueling weeks of testing ensued while his life hung by a thread. His daughter Kari gave up her job and home in BC to stay by his side up to 16 hours a day.

He was seen by numerous specialists to determine the cause, some of which are: neurologist, infectious disease specialist, cardiologist, gastroenterologist, respirologist, internal medicine specialist and a speech and language pathologist.

He endured many tests some of which include: 3 lumbar punctures, 2 CT's, 3 MRI's, ECG, EEG, endoscopy, chest X-rays swallowing assessments, and more.

He developed some complications which include a blood clot in his lung, internal bleeding and also received a blood transfusion for a massive infection he developed in his stomach from the PEG tube.

On Feb 22nd Gary was diagnosed by the neurologist with Infectious Encephalopathy.

His condition is no longer acute and he has been discharged back to his home hospital in Gravelbourg for monitoring while his condition improves.

The focus now is on building up his strength and cognitive ability through nutrition and rest while he awaits rehabilitation.

Because services are limited where he is, it is still necessary for Kari to be with him to assist with daily living.

Some of the money raised will go to helping Gary with the cost of care such as:
-numerous ambulance rides to and from    Moose jaw and Regina
-dental fees for extraction
-dentures and associated costs
-medication
-convalescent care fees
-supplements such as probiotics after long bouts of antibiotics, oils/vitamins  for the brain to help heal trauma, supplements to lower inflammation, amino acids and protein powders to rebuild muscles
-help caregiver with costs associated to be out of province (some flights for travel, accommodation in Regina or Moosejaw during rehabilitation, vehicle and gas for travel to and from hospital)
-clothing that fits while he gains weight back
-costs associated with travel to Regina/Moosejaw to see specialists and receive rehabilitation.

Gary is especially grateful to everyone for all of the love and support he has received during this difficult time.

Thankyou from the bottom of our hearts,  Gary and family ❤
