<div>Samuel (Samy) Garduno-Martinez is a happy, obedient, respectful young man, a good friend, an excellent son, and a brother who loves God with an unwavering faith. Unfortunately, he was at Abundant Life Christian School on December 16, 2024 when the shooting occurred.

<div>For the past 9 ½ months our son has been at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. My husband and I have stayed by his side, seven days a week, praying for a miracle. Samy’s life changed forever after being shot; two times in the head (possibly three times), once in the lower back, and once in his right arm. Samy underwent emergency surgery to relieve his swollen brain and tend to damage in his kidney and liver. Samy fell into a coma and was recovering in the Intensive Care Unit. The doctors gave little hope, despite having done everything possible to save his life. Three days later, Samy opened his eyes. That was the first miracle of resurrection in Samy’s life. Samy began to slowly recover with the help of doctors, nurses, and various physical, occupational, and speech therapists. He underwent lumbar spine surgery, required a feeding tube, as well as a procedure on his vocal cords to help him speak. After a month, Samy started talking again. Samy was scheduled to be discharged on April 8, but in March, tragedy again struck as Samy developed a devastating inflammation of his brain (encephalitis) as a result of the initial trauma. Samy was again admitted to the intensive care unit; intubated, in a coma, and again fighting for his life. We could only hope for another miracle from God.

<div>After 6 months, with numerous challenges and various new medications and treatments, another miracle occurred, the second resurrection. "Mom," said Samy. He hadn’t spoken a single word for 6 months. He moved his right arm and opened his eyes briefly. Our long hours of waiting were rewarded with this small glimmer of hope. Every day, Samy improves, showing his strength and determination, smiling, making small movements with his hand, and improving his speech, but mostly saying “Mom”! Although Samy is making progress, he still has a very long way to go. Fortunately, he has reached the point where he no longer needs a ventilator, but will require 24-hour care to perform and complete the basic activities of life. The next step in his recovery will be an admission at a specialized rehabilitation hospital near Chicago. Espiri, Dani (younger brother) and I will accompany Samy, temporarily relocating to the Chicago area to continue caring for him and supporting him. We need financial assistance since we have not returned to work since the shooting because we’ve stayed in the hospital with Samy due to his critical condition. This means we will need significant assistance for lodging, food, fuel, and support for the 2-3 months while we are away from home. In addition, we are preparing for a handicap accessible rental property after the rehab hospital while we determine the most significant need of long-term housing (a new house) and accessible transportation to meet Samy’s needs.

<div>Durante los últimos 9 meses y medio, nuestro hijo ha estado en el Hospital de Niños American Family en Madison, Wisconsin. Mi esposo y yo hemos estado a su lado siete días a la semana, orando por un milagro. La vida de Samy cambió para siempre después de recibir disparos; dos en la cabeza (posiblemente un tercero), uno en la parte baja de la espalda, y uno en su brazo derecho. Samy fue sometido a cirugía de emergencia para aliviar la hinchazón del cerebro y atender el daño en su hígado y su riñón. Samy cayó en coma y entro en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos. Los médicos daban pocas esperanzas a pesar de haber hecho todo lo posible por salvarle la vida. Tres días después, Samy abrió los ojos. Este fue el primer milagro de la resurrección en la vida de Samy. Samy comenzó a recuperarse lentamente con la ayuda de los médicos, enfermeras y distintos terapistas físicos, ocupacionales y del habla. Se le sometió a una cirugía de la columna lumbar y requirió un tubo para alimentarlo, además de un procedimiento en sus cuerdas vocales para ayudarlo a hablar. Después de un mes, Samy comenzó a hablar de nuevo. <div>Después de 6 meses, habiendo enfrentado muchos desafíos, con nuevos medicamentos y tratamientos, ocurrió otro milagro, la segunda resurrección. “Mamá”, dijo Samy. Él no había dicho ni una sola palabra por 6 meses. Movió su brazo derecho y abrió los ojos brevemente. Las largas horas de espera que tuvimos fueron recompensadas con esta pequeña luz de esperanza. Samy está mejorando cada día y demostrando su fortaleza y determinación. Esta sonriendo, haciendo pequeños movimientos con la mano y mejorando su habla, pero sobre todo diciendo “¡Mamá!” Aunque Samy está avanzando, aún le queda un camino muy largo por delante. Afortunadamente, ha llegado a un punto en el que ya no necesita un ventilador, pero necesitará atención las 24 horas para realizar y completar las actividades básicas de la vida diaria. El siguiente paso en su recuperación será ingresar a un hospital de rehabilitación especializado cerca de Chicago. Espiri, Dani (hermano menor), y yo acompañaremos a Samy, trasladándonos temporalmente al área de Chicago para poder seguir cuidándolo y apoyándolo. Necesitamos ayuda económica ya que desde el tiroteo, no hemos regresado a trabajar por estar con Samy en el hospital por su estado crítico. Esto significa que necesitamos ayuda para encontrar alojamiento, comida, combustible y apoyo durante los 2 a 3 meses que pasaremos lejos de nuestro hogar. Además, nos estamos preparando para vivir en una propiedad de alquiler accesible para discapacitados después del hospital de rehabilitación y mientras tomamos decisiones sobre sus necesidades más importantes de vivienda a largo plazo (una casa nueva) y transporte accesible para satisfacer las necesidades de Samy.
