<div><strong>SUPPORTING GAMBIAN JOURNALISTS TO ATTEND THE TRIAL AGAINST FORMER DICTATOR‘S HENCHMAN</strong>

<div>We support the participation of Gambian journalists Mrs. Mariam Sankanu and Mr. Sanna Camara in the trial against former Interior Minister Ousman Sonko in Switzerland and we kindly ask for your help. In January 2024, the two Gambian journalists attended the opening session of a trial against former Gambian Interior Minister Ousman Sonko held in Bellizona, Switzerland. For the further upcoming sessions, they do not have a visa anymore, and neither do they, as independent journalists, have the necessary resources to pay for travel costs and daily expenditures.

<div>Ousman Sonko is accused of crimes against humanity committed in The Gambia during the former dictatorship under Yahya Jammeh. Sonko was detected in Switzerland in 2017 after having applied for asylum there, and held in custody since. The charges raised against him include rape, torture and murder, and he is charged under universal jurisdiction.

<div>Media coverage of the case is extremely important for the Gambian public and the country's post-dictatorship reconciliation process. As the trial is not being televised, it is essential for Gambian journalists to attend the hearings on site in order to provide the Gambian people with the details and developments of the trial. Mariam Sankanu and Sanna Camara are two of the Gambian journalists accredited by the Federal Court in Bellinzona to cover the trial.

<div>We therefore financially and administratively support Mariam Sankanu and Sanna Camara, in order for them to be able to attend the next steps of the trial. This includes visa application, international travel, accommodation and daily expenses while in Switzerland.

<div>The next phase of the trial will take place in early March 2024. The closing hearings havehowever not yet been published. It is assumed that these will take place in late summer to autumn. We aim to support Sanna and Mariam in attending both times periods, March and late summer. The association "Wir sind da e.V." has vouched for the journalists for both phases of the hearings.

Im Januar 2024 nahmen die beiden gambischen Journalisten an der Eröffnungssitzung des Prozesses gegen den ehemaligen gambischen Innenminister Ousman Sonko in Bellizona, Schweiz, teil. <div>Ousman Sonko werden Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit vorgeworfen, die in Gambia während der ehemaligen Diktatur unter Yahya Jammeh begangen wurden. Sonko wurde 2017 in der Schweiz aufgespürt, nachdem er dort einen Asylantrag gestellt hatte, und befindet sich seitdem in Haft. Die gegen ihn erhobenen Vorwürfe umfassen Vergewaltigung, Folter und Mord, die in der Schweiz nach dem Weltrechtsprinzip verhandelt werden.

<div>Die Medienberichterstattung über den Fall ist für die gambische Öffentlichkeit und den Versöhnungsprozess des Landes nach der Diktatur äußerst wichtig. Da der Prozess nicht im Fernsehen übertragen wird, ist es für gambische Journalisten unerlässlich, den Anhörungen vor Ort beizuwohnen, um die gambische Bevölkerung mit den Einzelheiten und Entwicklungen des Prozesses zu versorgen. Mariam Sankanu und Sanna Camara sind zwei der gambischen Journalisten, die vom Bundesgericht in Bellinzona zur Berichterstattung über den Prozess akkreditiert wurden.

Der Verein "Wir sind da e.V." hat sich für die Journalisten für beide Phasen der Anhörungen verbürgt.
