Support future Midwives: Ava and Kate in Ghana

Hi everyone! We’re Ava and Katelin, third-year student midwives in London, and this Easter we have an incredible opportunity to volunteer in Ghana. We’ll be working alongside healthcare professionals in maternity care, gaining valuable experience in a low-resource setting. This placement will allow us to understand and contribute to improving maternal and neonatal care in a country with significantly higher maternal mortality rates than the UK.

Why Ghana?
Maternal and neonatal mortality rates in Ghana are much higher than in the UK:
• Around 263 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in Ghana
• 22.8 neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births
Compared to the UK, where we have:
• 13.41 maternal deaths per 100,000
• 1.69 neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births
This gap in maternal and neonatal health is what we aim to learn about and help address during our time in Ghana.

Why We Want to Do This:
• This experience will be life-changing, both personally and professionally.
• It will help us adapt our midwifery practices to be more resourceful and creative in low-resource settings.
• We’ll gain valuable cultural education, which will make us more compassionate, adaptable midwives.
• The opportunity will allow us to truly understand the importance of resources and the impact of efficient care.
• We’ll gain hands-on experience that will enhance our future careers and help us make a positive impact on global maternal health.

Why We Need Your Help:
Unfortunately, this incredible opportunity is self-funded. As students living in London, it’s a financial challenge to participate in this AMAZING program. We are reaching out for support, and we’d appreciate any donations, big or small, to help make this journey possible! we appreciate times are hard, so please share the link.
Every contribution helps us achieve this once in a lifetime experience and allows us to make a positive impact on maternal health in Ghana and in our professional careers. We truly appreciate your support and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us make this dream a reality!

With Love,
Ava & Katelin
