Help Francis Anwana

Donation protected
Francis Anwana is a deaf, cognitively impaired man who was brought to the United States from Nigeria in 1983 by the Lutheran Church to attend the Lutheran School for the Deaf in Detroit.  He was brought here to learn American Sign Language and receive an education. At the school he thrived and learned to communicate; something that he was unable to do in Nigeria.

Over the years, administrators came and went at the school and in his life, and those entrusted with responsibility for handling his immigration affairs, neglected to do so.  A decade ago, caregivers realized the error and brought Francis to the immigration authorities to seek a status that would allow him to continue living in the United States. The immigration authorities granted Francis deferred action status and a work permit.

Thursday, September 6, Francis was made to appear in front of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official who ordered Francis deported at 8 am, Tuesday, September 11.  Deportation was ordered without consideration of his impairments, how he would communicate, or how this handicapped person might survive without supports in Nigeria. Currently that order has been delayed; however, he is still in deportation proceedings.

We are hoping to compensate for legal representation and other costs during this uncertain time for Francis. Please consider making a contribution to this GoFundMe page or make a tax deductible donation directly to the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center.  Thank you for your consideration!
