Support France's Afro-Colombia Solidarity Trip

Donation protected
I am excited to share the news that from October 26th -November 3rd of this year, I was accepted to be part of a delegation to Cali, Colombia.

During this 9 day journey into lush Colombia, we will explore how we all play a part in global problems and suggest ways to contribute to positive change locally (from the United States) through international solidarity. We will expand our knowledge of Black Colombia. Participants will meet with people and organizations from different walks of life and establish meaningful relationships with people from Colombia who are directly impacted by issues that we are directly involved in and those we may have only heard or seen through the news or other media.

As many of you know, Colombia has recently signed a peace agreement to end their 52-year civil war. However, Afro-Colombians and indigenous peoples were the ones most victimized and displaced by the violence continue to fight for a voice in the peace process.  Beginning in the late 1980s, black territories became the predominant sites of war-related violence. Guerrillas and paramilitaries overtook swaths of ancestral territories for battlefields, coca crops and cocaine labs. And national and multinational corporations pillaged natural resources like coal and gold, damaging the environment. The displaced Afro-Colombian population represents at least 30% of the total displaced population in the country, equivalent to more than one million citizens.  The safety and security of community leaders remains tenuous despite the end of the conflict.

My goals for this trip:

- To learn about how Afro-Colombian social movements have been able to be successful and how we can further support their work
- A better understanding of the Colombian peace process and lessons that I can influence my own work  with Haitians and Dominicans and approaches to conflict resolution
- Building lasting relationships for Pan-African and Pan-Diasporic solidarity movements  for a better tomorrow

As you can imagine, I need to do some fundraising to make this trip possible.  I have already been awarded a partial scholarship to cover some of the expenses.  My personal fundraising goal is to raise $2000 to cover flight and expenses as well as donations to local organizations that will be hosting us and providing educational workshops for the delegation.

I appreciate your support towards my goals! In return, I'll provide you with photos and a report describing the trip and key takeaways.
