Support for the Vera Family

Our mom, our sister, our aunt, and our friend, Celia Vera, was diagnosed with a rare form of malignant cancer of her skull 17 years ago.  Following the initial surgery, which removed a large section of her skull, Celia continued to battle the cancer with an intensive proton radiation treatment. This treatment saved her life, yet left her with debilitating side effects.  These side effects have completely changed her life, leaving severe neurological impairments that mimic the symptoms of a massive stroke.  Celia is now legally blind, is no longer mobile, and experiences frequent seizures.

In July, Celia was sadly hospitalized for the 8th time since 2009.  After spending a month and a half away from home at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and then Spaulding Rehab Center, she returned home to face the challenges of having to recover from this most recent stroke and find a way to live with a rare condition called SMART (Stroke-like Migraine Attacks After Radiation Therapy) syndrome. Though Celia’s condition is not reversible, her doctors have been desperately searching for ways to treat one of the worst cases of SMART known.

As Celia works to recover her life at home, our family provides care along with outside services (PT, OT, speech therapy and nursing) around the clock, as Celia cannot be left unattended. We recently built a ramp and renovated the bathroom to make the house accessible.   Though we’ve made physical improvements to her living space, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the only viable treatment options to maintain her quality of life.  There is no insurance coverage for this treatment nor reimbursement for the purchase of a hyperbaric chamber.  Celia needs this treatment as it is vital to her survival.  Without access to the chamber, Celia will continue to lose function in mobility, vision and cognition.

Celia is a fighter, courageous beyond measure and has never given up.  On October 9, 2018, she will turn 63 years young.  Our family is asking you to join us in celebrating Celia’s birthday and supporting efforts that will allow her to remain in her home with some quality of life.  If we are fortunate enough to find the financial support she needs, we hope to create a framed poster with the names of everyone who contributed and give it to her for her birthday.  Your financial support means more to all of us—our mom and our entire family—than words could possibly express.  We know how many high need and worthwhile requests are out there.  Our hope is that the many generous people who read this will help in any way they can- just 15 dollars will pay for an hour of in-home nursing care. Ripples make waves eventually, so please contribute and please take a moment to share this site with your friends, family, colleagues.
