Support for the Scott Commons and UVA Community

Donation protected
We (and the Scott Commons staff) are overcome with the generosity of the UVA Law community. We’re very close to reaching our goal of $40,000 to support both our Scott Commons contract staff and the UVA emergency assistance fund for UVA contract workers and employees described in President Jim Ryan’s email of April 6. We will hold the fund open until May 15, 2020 with the hope of meeting our goal at which time we’ll close the fund for further donations and forward the proceeds as described below.

Having met the initial goal for our direct support to the Scott Commons Staff early on April 8, donations received after 5:00 p.m. on April 8 will be divided between the Scott Commons Staff and the emergency assistance fund for UVA contract workers and employees described in President Jim Ryan’s email of April 6.  The Scott Commons Staff agrees with this approach because, like us, they want to support other workers who are facing difficult circumstances. We hope you’ll take the opportunity to support both our local Law School community and the broader community of University contract workers and employees.

Our original appeal:

As we are sure you have heard, President Jim Ryan recently announced that UVA will establish a fund to support contract workers at the university whose outside employer has furloughed them during this time.  We appreciate and support this effort.  We are writing to propose another fund – meant to complement the University’s efforts – that would provide additional support to the staff in Scott Commons who have had their incomes disrupted by the current health emergency.  These funds will provide financial assistance to members of our community, communicate to them that they are valued and supported, and most importantly show that we are all in this together.

Note: If we determine that distributing the proceeds to anyone would affect their eligibility for benefits or otherwise cause tax or other legal complications, we will direct the proceeds to the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation to support their efforts to stabilize households during this pandemic.
