On July 17th Stan was rushed into surgery due to a life threatening medical emergency,  sepsis. A portion of his small intestine and the beginning of the large intestine was dead and had to be removed. Stan began his first major recovery, which required multiple blood transfusions and various pumps and drains to return his body function to normal. On July 25th he was discharged from the hospital, but was brought back to the emergency room only 4 hours later. His knee was badly swollen and he could not walk. It was determined that Stan's heartbeat was in an irregular pattern that can cause heart complications, including blood clots, which is believed to be a cause of sepsis.

After several tests to ensure that his surgery wounds were in a safe enough condition, Stan was put on blood thinners to reduce the chance of clots and stroke. The swollen knee was ruled as gout, which results in severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in the joints. Stan's heart rate continued to be erratic. He had a full internal heart check, resulting in his heart having to be shocked back in to rhythm. The procedure went well and he was discharged on July 20th. On August 5th he was taken back to the ER due to excruciating pain in his foot and knee. It was another gout flare up and he was given medicine and sent back home.

Stan continued to struggle with recovery and his energy levels were very low. On September 13th they returned to the ER as Stan was vomiting and could not keep anything down. After several scans it was determined that he had an abscess the size of a grapefruit on his small intestine. A drain was put in and a variety of antibiotics were given. Stan was in a lot of pain and the doctors had difficulty getting it under control. The infection moved to his bloodstream, which can be a lot harder to fight. On September 19th he returned home and continued to receive antibiotics.

On October 7th Stan began vomiting and experiencing extreme pain. An ambulance was called and after several tests he was rushed into emergency surgery again. Stan had a perforated ulcer that had burned through the wall in a segment of his gastrointestinal tract. Another long road of healing began. Stan's story was being looked at by 5+ doctors with specialties in the heart, kidney, joints, blood and lungs. One of the antibiotics sent him into kidney failure and he was required to do a few dialysis treatments.  He also developed pneumonia in his left lung.

On October 16th an infectious disease doctor was added to the team to help rule out any major infections. Stan continued to be tested daily by the doctors but no definitive explanation could be given for his condition. His body continued to have inflammation and difficulty recovering. On October 28th Stan was discharged from the hospital. After losing 80 lbs the road to recovery was not going to be easy as simple tasks like walking and standing were difficult for him. Stan had 3-4 doctor appointments each week to continue monitoring his condition. On November 28th he was brought back to the ER for vomiting, stomach pain and fever.

Stan is a fighter and continues to keep pushing each day. They have been through a nightmare that no one should have to endure and I believe this fund could help give them some peace of mind. When you think of Stan and Cathy you think of kindness, generosity and their ability to always be there when you need them, no questions asked. I know this has been a tough year for many people so anything you can contribute would mean a lot. There is no amount too small to show your love and support for Stan and Cathy.

If you do not feel comfortable showing your amount or name, please keep in mind there is an anonymous option available. If you would like to share a message with them I will comprise a card to present to them as well with each message and note. You can message me privately if you would prefer.
