One of our colleagues here in Bangladesh was recently involved in a serious road accident. Travelling in the southwest of the country, Sarwar was sitting in the passenger seat of a van which came into collision with a lorry. Sarwar unfortunately received the full impact of the collision, which seriously injured his left arm and the left side of his face, including his eye. The driver of the van, who was unknown to Sarwar, fled the accident.
Doctors have been fighting for two weeks to save his arm but his condition is deteriorating. It is difficult to quite put into words the severity of the situation. The humorous has been so severely fractured that most of the bone will have to be replaced. The impact of the collision tore the muscle from his upper arm and has been removed, muscle from his lower arm has been and transferred to his upper arm in an attempt to replace what has been lost. At the moment the arm is being held together by a series of metal pins.
Due to his family's financial position, Sarwar is currently being treated in a government hospital. His doctor is trusted, however, the standard of care in the hospital is terrible. With over 50 patients in his ward, which is crawling with cockroaches and stray cats, the risk of infection is very likely. The doctors are now talking about amputating his arm imminently. We are rallying around for advice and support to get him transferred to a hospital in India where, hopefully, with improved care they will be able to save his arm, though it is an extremely time-sensitive situation.
All of our colleagues here in Dhaka are collecting money to try to increase the quality of care that he is getting.
In addition to this I wanted to take the opportunity to reach out to my own friends, family members and colleagues to ask for your support. Sarwar's medical bill is currently estimated to be around 300,000 taka - approximately £2,600 - and is rapidly increasing with each treatment. Through a combined effort and with enough financial support we hope that his family can get him the best treatment available and give him the best chance of saving his arm. In Bangladesh, losing his arm will mean his family losing their livelihood.
