Support for Refugees in our Sister City Ungheni

Winston-Salem Sister Cities is raising funds to assist our Sister City, Ungheni in the Republic of Moldova.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in millions of refugees fleeing Ukraine into Europe. Ungheni has been particularly affected by this refugee crisis. As one of the primary border crossings and only train connection into the European Union, Ungheni has had to support a disproportionately high number of refugees.

Any assistance that you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Literally every penny counts.

Moldova, a small country of less than 3 million people that borders Ukraine, has received the most refugees per capita than any other country. As of March 20, more than 360,000 refugees had entered Moldova. Approximately 100,00 of them, 4% of the current population of Moldova, are currently residing in the country, half of which are children.

Ungheni has been especially impacted by the refugee crisis in Moldova. Of the roughly 260,000 refugees that have transitted through Moldova, the vast majority continue on into Romania, which a member of NATO and the European Union. Ungheni is the one of the main border crossings into Romania and is the border crossing for the only passenger train line into Romania.

We would like to inform you that Ungheni City Hall together with the NGO JCI Ungheni have launched a Campaign „Together with Ukraine" from the first days of Russia's attack on Ukraine, through which we help refugees from Ukraine. If our friends from Winston Salem can support us in helping the refugees from Ukraine, we will appreciate and be grateful. You definitely can join our Campaign „Together with Ukraine". Together we can help our Ukrainian friends, who are going through these difficult and awful times.

All funds raised will go directly to JCI Ungheni, an NGO in Ungheni that is the primary charitable organization working with the city government in Ungheni to support the refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine.
