Dear Family & Friends,

I hope and pray this email finds you all well. I am writing to inform you of my current medical challenges. To begin, I have been living in relatively good health with Lupus since 2011. In August 2018 I was diagnosed with breast cancer but thankfully we caught it early. The doctors considered the appropriate course of treatment and I had a lumpectomy followed by radiation in December 2018. In March 2019 I knew that something was still wrong, so I went back for additional testing and at the recommendation of my Rheumatologist (Lupus Doc) I went to a Hematologist.

I’ve been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a blood cancer in which your bone marrow doesn’t make enough healthy red blood cells. So, my doctor informed me that I would need a bone marrow transplant in order to save my life.

Phase I
Prepare my body by slowing down the production of the abnormal red blood cells.

Since June 2019, I’ve undergone eight months of chemotherapy treatment. Unfortunately, the treatment did not decrease the production of abnormal red blood cells. In October my doctor placed me on a second chemotherapy treatment, in addition to the infusion chemo treatment, in an effort for my body to go into a remission and be able to have the bone marrow transplant.

Phase II
Identify a donor
Final preparation of my body for a Bone Marrow Transplant

A family member has been identified as a bone marrow donor. Initially I must go through a battery of pre-op tests. The week of my bone marrow transplant, my entire immune system will have to be shut down in order to have the procedure. I will go through five days of chemotherapy, for several hours each day, and one day of full body radiation for 45 minutes. They will perform the transplant on an outpatient basis on day seven. After the transplant I will need 24-hour care for the next 60 days. Each day I will have to go to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD for follow up appointments during that 60 days period to insure there is no infection or issues.

I am familiar with this blood cancer because my Mother was diagnosed with late stage MDS in 2016 and died five months later. I have let everyone know that I plan to do what my Mother couldn’t do – fight MDS and my way back to good health. With faith I will accomplish that goal.

Big Love,
Phyllis
