On Sunday morning, Noodle Decatur lost one of our longtime cooks, Oscar Mateo, to gun violence.
The servers are the face of the restaurant, but Oscar was truly the heart. You didn’t see him out in the dining room, but you could taste the love and care he put into every dish that he cooked - seriously, he made the best fried rice you’ve ever had. Oscar was always ready with a smile, a joke, a delicious meal, and a helping hand. He was our numero uno.
While this is a shocking and heartbreaking loss for the restaurant and his coworkers who loved him dearly, it is even more devastating for Oscar’s family in Guatemala, whom he supported. He leaves behind a wife and five children who now don’t have a means to support themselves. Oscar’s Noodle family is stepping up to help and we hope that others will too.
Any donations will be given to Oscar’s brother to help with final expenses. Anything left over will be sent to Oscar’s wife and children. As the GM of Noodle and Oscar’s coworker of seven years, I, Parker Hilley, will be handling the disbursements of funds to the appropriate parties. Donations will be withdrawn into my account and I will be writing a check to Oscar’s brother.
