Support for Naga Meenakshi's Family

Dear Friends,
Please take few minutes of your time to read the sad story of a family. I recently came across this heart-wrenching account of a woman met with fatal accident our family personally knows in my township.
Naga Meenakshi was married to Sarvesh from Kaikalur town in the year 2005 and the couple were blessed with 2 sons, Nagendra Babu (elder son) and Sekhar Babu (younger son). Sarvesh was working as tractor driver in local farms near township and Naga Meenakshi was an at-home wife looking after the kids. The small but happy family were leading a peaceful life in the village. It was in the year 2010 when tragedy struck Naga Meenakshi’s family for the first time. Sarvesh was diagnosed with an advanced-stage blood cancer and passed away leaving behind her and his two young sons aged 5 and 4 at the time. For her, the world around her came to a standstill. In this unprecedented situation where the family lost their single source of income, She had to eventually step in and take charge of feeding the family. She summoned her courage and took a job as a cook in the local Anganwadi (village’s Child Welfare division) and started earning, although a meagre amount. She played as key role in continuing the education of Sekhar and Nagendra. She hasn’t remarried due to her undiluted love towards Sarvesh, turning a deaf-ear to advice from elders in her family.
As if to test the woman’s undeterred courage, disaster struck in 2018 again when Naga Meenakshi was traveling to Srisailam (a religious destination in Andhra Pradesh,India) on a bus along with her 2 kids. The bus met with a horrible road accident during the journey. Her younger son, Sekhar, died on the spot and the elder one, Nagendra Babu, suffered grave injuries to his limbs and went into a coma instantly. The doctors reviewed Nagendra’s medical status and decided not to operate on the limbs due to the boy being in coma and thus removed his right limb in order to save his life. Nagendra thus lost his right arm. Naga Meenakshi herself barely survived the accident with major injuries to her limbs. The doctors were able to operate on her and reconstituted her arms . Nagendra has come out of coma eventually but the loss of his arm has had a vital impact on his condition, both mentally and physically. Naga Meenakshi is still recovering and is a long way from being able to work again with her reconstituted limbs. She has now shifted herself, along with her surviving son, to her parents’ house in the nearby town.
In a span of a few years, a happy family of 4 was reduced to 2 barely surviving individuals after two painful tragedies that befell them. Naga Meenakshi’s hardships tell us that such mishaps are not limited to movies but may happen to anyone. It is hard to imagine anyone going through a difficulty as painful as this, let alone those we know dearly. The family also did not receive the compensation benefits promised by the Government and so they had to keep some of their immediate needs to rest.
These immediate needs include Nagendra’s education to begin with.
1.Naga Meenakshi’s surgeries to her limbs and legs are half-done and the remaining, if not completed soon, could never be attempted and she could be permanently disabled leaving her unfit for further employment opportunities.
2.Nagendra is now in 10th grade in the local school and needs immediate funding to continue his education.
3. Nagendra also requires artificial limb to help himself with the situation. These limbs are made in Northern Indian city of Jaipur and this involves money as well.
4. The family also needs funds to support their day-to-day lives as their grandparents are not fortunate to be well off. They lead poor lives themselves and are depressed to see their daughter in the fateful situation.
I have thus embarked on a journey to support the family financially as best as I could. I set up a Go Fund account for this support and I encourage all of you to contribute to the best of your status in order to support the family. I am proud to say that my elder daughter, Jahnavi (9 years old), was the first to contribute. She had a fond memory of playing with the Sekhar Babu when she was in India last year 2017. Upon hearing the tragedy, she decided to assist by setting up a lemonade stall and Slime stand outside our home over a weekend. She contributed $96 to the Go Fund, the sum-total of all her sale proceeds!
