On Friday September 7, Monica Mesa unexpectedly and tragically lost her oldest son Cheyne to suicide after an on-going struggle with depression and addiction. Cheyne was 24 years old and will be remembered for his gentle, generous nature, his kind compassionate soul, his devotion to those he loved, his infectious laugh, and his wild side. He had a passion for sports and the great outdoors, and dreamed of moving to California to open a restaurant and surf.
The photo below was taken on July 18, when Monica had all her boys together. Along with the photo she posted “This is my WHY. These boys, men I should say, have inspired me to always be my best, to keep learning from my mistakes, to be compassionate and nonjudgemental, to let people be who they truly are, to forgive, and to dream big!” Throughout her life as a single mom and yoga teacher, Monica has continuously found inspiration and courage to share her gifts with the world from the inspiration and encouragement of her sons. As the oldest, Cheyne was most often the one to stop by and check in, making sure that his mom was ok.
Now Monica needs our help. As a self-employed yoga teacher, who earns her living solely from teaching yoga classes, workshops, trainings and retreats, she has no vacation time, paid time off, or insurance that she can utilize to take the time to mourn the loss of her son and seek the healing and support she needs to overcome this incredible tragedy.
Donations will help to cover the cost of the memorial service expenses, lost wages, and healing services and support so that Monica can take care of herself and her 2 sons as they navigate these heartbreaking times.
As Monica shared yesterday “We all did our best to love him. And now we have an angel above and his Spirit inside. I will never be the same. This is a life initiation like no other. I will emerge, in his honor.”
