<div>On January 21, 2026, I.C.E. agents detained Hassane Barry (38). Hassane and his wife are asylum seekers and have lived in the U.S. since 2023. They welcomed their baby one month ago.

<div>They had gone to an appointment to apply for the baby's passport and were driving home when they were surrounded by unmarked vehicles. Armed, masked I.C.E. agents broke the driver's window even after Hassane alerted them to there being a baby in the car. Thankfully the car seat was covered with a blanket on that cold day, as shards of glass were discovered all over it. They then detained Hassane.

<div>Per a <a href="https://www.pressherald.com/2026/01/28/ice-agents-shatter-window-leave-1-month-old-baby-mother-in-car-after-portland-arrest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Portland Press Herald article</a> , journalists confirmed with his lawyer that he has no criminal history. They also searched his name in a national criminal database and there were no results.

<div>Hassane's wife was left on the roadside with a damaged vehicle in freezing winter conditions. She does not have a driver's license herself, and was now by herself with their one month old baby.

<div>Observers that had realized what was going (but arrived after Hassane was placed into an I.C.E. vehicle) began to film the incident and called local resources to report it. They asked his wife what they could do for her, confirmed she had a baby in the car, then helped them warm up and get home. Video footage ends with showing shards of glass sticking out from window trim where it was broken, then panning to the back seat of the car, where you can see the baby blanket covering the car seat. <div>At this time Hassane is still detained and was taken to Plymouth, Massachusetts. He has legal representation and has been calling his wife daily to check in on her and the baby.

<div>Staying at home, except for appointments for the baby, Hassane's wife is very worried about what is to come. She is unsure if she is also a target, since Hassane shouldn't have been himself. She is now by herself with a young baby, with no income, and unable to drive their car.
</div>

<div>Funds from this campaign will be used to support their family with the many needs they will have in coming months. This includes, but is not limited to: rent, utilities, car insurance, car window repairs, cell phone, wifi, groceries, potential babysitters, household cleaning and paper products, in addition to the many needs for the baby (diapers, wipes, formula, nursery supplies, clothing, and more).

<div>We may adjust the goal depending on future news about Hassane's continued detainment or release, as well as once the medical bills from the birth are issued. While they have health insurance, they were advised it would not cover 100% of the bill. She is not sure yet how much they will need to pay.
