UPDATE: Francesca saw an orthopedic specialist on August 28th to have her injuries assessed. Her left broken arm is healing and was re-casted, but her right fractured elbow needed surgery as well. She went in on August 30th and had a successful surgery, but will be fully immobile with both arms for 6-8 weeks, for recovery
This was another huge blow to the Lorenzini family, as Francesca will now need around the clock support, with both arms casted for two months. Mom and dad are trying to figure out home care, work schedules, and this has put additional strain on their life and finances.

All of us who have children with first generation Italians, dream of sending our kids to spend time with their European families. The independence, language skills and the experience of the Italian culture is invaluable when they are young. In August, Francesca went on this adventure to Fuscaldo, Italy to visit her family for three weeks. The plan was to learn her father's native language and to have a fun and cultural experience with her grandmother and uncles. This time away was also an opportunity for Annie and Luca to focus and establish new and more lucrative jobs, before Frankie's return. Annemarie started working as a drug and alcohol counselor and Luca was in the midst of starting a new restaurant job.


Unfortunately tragedy hit only ten days into Francesca's trip. On the evening of August 14th, she was with friends on a trampoline, when she fell and broke both her arms. She was transported by ambulance to the local emergency hospital, in agony and not understanding the language spoken around her. The accident also happened on a major holiday, so services were minimal, even with the severity of the injuries. Francesca broke both bones in her left arm and fractured her right elbow. The decision was made for Luca to fly to Italy, and help advocate for her medically. Annie had to stay behind because of the financial situation not allowing for both parents to fly over.

After six days with her injuries, the doctors finally operated on her left arm. The break was so bad, bone surgery was needed to install pins and cables to bring the bones back together. Two days after surgery, and much advocating, Luca was reluctantly given clearance from the Italian hospital to transport her back home to follow up with her injuries in America.
Needless to say, this has been an emotional and financial tragedy for the Lorenzini family. Francesca was starting high school as a freshman this year, but will have to be temporarily home schooled during her long recovery. Her home care will have to be managed by Annie and Luca, and one of them will have to be with her full time. We are also anticipating any unforeseen financial costs because of the severity of her recovery and possible therapies to get her back on her feet.
As many of you know, Annie has a heart of gold and has touched us all with her gift of caring for others. Luca is a loving father and is also someone you can depend on. Let's help this wonderful family get through this unfortunate tragedy and get them all back on their feet.
